Concrete Penetrating Sealers

Concrete penetrating sealers were earlier used to preserve concrete dams and bridges. But the functions of concrete penetrating sealers have now been expanded to conditioning concrete, damp proofing, and waterproofing. Further, these are successfully used on buildings, bridges, parking garages, and historical monuments to protect them against deterioration.

Sometimes described as reactive, a concrete penetrating sealer consists of polycarbonate materials, which can effectively seal any surface. The prime function of a concrete penetrating sealer is to chemically infiltrate into the pores of the concrete and defend it against harmful chemicals and extraneous moisture. Additionally, durable sealing film produced by the concrete penetrants can avoid abrasions and ultraviolet-induced deterioration. Depending on the density and finish of the concrete, penetrating sealers have penetration depths up to 1/8 in.

Concrete penetrating sealers are primarily used to eliminate dusting and enhance the durability of the concrete surface. These protect the walls of concrete buildings from airborne salts, which may sometimes affect the steel reinforcing contained in the concrete. Since they do not alter the concrete?s texture, concrete penetrating sealers are also ideal for slippery surfaces and those prone to corrosion and freeze-thaw damage.

Silanes and siloxanes are the most commonly used concrete penetrating sealers. Both are silicone-based materials, and have the capability to react with silica found in concrete surfaces to form a hydrophobic siloxane resin organic structure, which in turn repels water without any loss of vapor transmission. Since siloxanes offer good hydrophobic performance, they are ideal for sealing brick, stucco, and stones. Silane sealers are a perfect choice to give a long lasting shiny appearance to concrete surfaces.

Fluorinated resins and epoxy penetrating sealers are other examples of concrete penetrating sealers. They are primarily designed for better protection of new concrete, and are widely applied in warehouse floors, columns and beams. For the stabilization of porous concrete floor surfaces, water-based penetrating sealers can be used.
