Garage Floor Protection
Basic garage floor protection is all about keeping your floor looking good. Corrosive materials like road salt, engine oil, battery acid and antifreeze can quickly deteriorate any concrete surface whether it is your garage or workshop. An industrial style mat is one option as it reduces dust traveling about and is easy to clean and move around as well. You can clean it where it sits or take it outside and give it a good cleaning. Soap and water is best used for a mat.
Another form of garage floor protection is roll matting. This particular product covers the entire floor area. It is a specific type of vinyl made for a concrete floor area such as a garage or workshop. It is easy to clean, protects your area from dirt, moisture, and spills. It is also slip resistant and esthetically pleasing. It does cost more than basic mats though.
Garage tiles are a more expensive form of garage floor protection. They snap together and are quite strong and rugged. They come in different sizes and can cover the entire floor space or just certain areas you want covered or protected. They also offer some slip resistance as well.
Another common form of garage floor protection is an epoxy resin, which can be used as a protective coating for your concrete flooring. It is very resistant to stains and it does a superior job of preventing chipping. It also protects against moisture seeping into the floor. Generally, it is used as an adhesive for securing things together.
If you are just tired of how your garage floor looks all the time then some form of garage floor protection is in order. We have already covered mats, tiles and epoxy resin. If you have neglected a concrete floor to the point of chips and cracking then before you do anything you must patch it up. If you plan to apply any type of coating, the flooring must be properly prepped. Failure to do this will result in your coating chipping or lifting from the concrete surface. All cracks and chipped areas are filled in with a mixture of epoxy and sand. Do not apply anything over top until the mixture has completely dried.
To test whether you have a moisture problem or not is rather simple. Place a rubber mat on the garage floor and make sure you tape down the edges. After a day or two has passed, lift the mat and see if any water collected between the mat and the floor. If there is water there then you have a moisture problem. You will need to apply a sealer that is designed to solve this type of issue. Once that step is completed, you will be able to continue with your garage floor protection. Whatever solution you come up with to looking after your concrete floor, make sure you have read all the instructions or consulted with professional at the hardware store. You just want to avoid any costly errors.
