Take Care When Cleaning Laminate Flooring
Even though it is very durable you still have to be careful when cleaning laminate flooring. The inner layer of this flooring is made of MDF, which doesn't react well to a lot of moisture. This is one of the reasons you should never wet mop a laminate floor or apply a lot of water to it when cleaning. Dry mopping is best and the Swiffer mops and cleaners on the market today are perfect for this type of flooring.
If you do have to wash up the floor, the best way to do so is to mix 1/4 cup of vinegar in 32 ounces of water and pour this into a spray bottle. Spray a small amount of the solution on the floor, one small area at a time, and then wipe it dry.
You can use a vacuum cleaner on he floor, but be careful when using one that has a beater brush. This part of the vacuum cleaner can actually damage the floor by taking chips out of the planks. Large pieces of sand and rock can scratch the surface of the flooring. You can make your cleaning job easier by having large mats at the entranceways to pick these up off the boots and shoes of people entering your home.
Microfiber pads are also great for cleaning the floors. They pick up all the dust and dirt and best of all you can throw these pads in the washing machine, unlike other cleaning cloths that you can only use once and then throw away.
If you do have stains on the floor that you cannot remove with a simple washing, there are cleaners you can use. For example, permanent marker stains will come off right away with nail polish remover. Chewing gum will come off when you harden it with ice because then you can just scrape it off the floor. In case of scratches to the laminate, there are touch up kits you can buy that contain the putty, wax and crayons you need to do the repairs yourself.
