Do It Yourself Concrete Staining: Things to Know Before You Begin

Do it yourself concrete staining is the cheapest and easiest way to enhance the appearance of your concrete surfaces. The alternatives, tearing out existing concrete and replacing with new or decorative overlays, are not recommended for do-it-yourselfers and can be very expensive. But before you begin your staining project there are a few things you need to know.

There are two types of concrete stains to choose from, acid stains and acrylic stains. Acid stains work by chemically reacting with free lime in the surface to produce a natural looking, translucent color. They create a mottled, variegated, multi-hued coloring. Every concrete surface reacts differently to acids stains making each job unique. Acrylic stains are waterborne and have pigments that seep into the pores and adhere to the concrete, therefore creating a more consistent, semi translucent color like that of a dye. Acrylic stains will help mask imperfections and discolorations whereas acid stains actually accentuate them.

For many surfaces, acid and acrylic stains will work equally as well, but which one you choose depends on the look you want. However, there are situations where one type will work better than the other. For older, exterior concrete (more than 15-20 yrs old) acid stains may not work because much of the free lime has leeched away. Acrylic stains are great for old concrete because of its increased porosity over time. Acid stains work well with newer concrete because of the availability of free lime. If repairs need to be made such as patching pop outs or scaling, then acrylics may be the better choice to help disguise the repairs. Any patching materials will stand out with acid stains. For smooth trowelled interior surfaces with less porosity, acid stains are usually better because they don't require as much penetration to color the concrete.

Before beginning it's also important to have realistic expectations. Staining can turn dull, gray concrete into a beautiful and colorful finish, but it's impossible to know exactly how the finished product will look, especially with acid stains. Every concrete surface is different and so will accept stains differently. The exact same stain will have two different appearances with two different slabs. Even seasoned pros can't predict the exact outcome of a staining job. For this reason, it's not a good idea to try to exactly match the color of concrete to anything else such as brick or siding. There's a very good chance you won't be successful. Instead, choose a complimentary color or shade for your concrete. For instance, if you have light brown siding, then choose a dark brown stain.

The most critical part of staining is preparation. Take time in deciding how you want your concrete to look and getting the surface ready to apply the stain. You get one shot at getting it right unless you want to do a major overhaul to the surface. Do it yourself concrete staining is not a difficult process but does require an honest effort to be satisfied your finished product.

Why You Should Consider Staining Your Concrete Floor

Acid staining can make a common concrete floor into look like expensive natural stone flooring. Not only is it a fraction of the price, but for people allergic to carpeting materials it's a godsend. Another great application is in houses with radiant floor heating. Radiant heating is at its most efficient when insulating floor coverings like tile or carpet are minimized.

The process of staining a concrete floor, while not overly complex, can be tough to get the results you want from. Most folks are probably better off hiring a professional contractor. It's a risky project for the do-it-yourselfer.

If you're not familiar with it, concrete stain isn't a paint or finish coat. It involves a chemical reaction on cement materials. Typically a water-based solution of hydrochloric acid and inorganic salts, the stain reacts with minerals and lime in the concrete aggregate, and the result of the reaction is coloring. It works on new or old concrete, and is fairly durable if you maintain it with sealer or wax, since it won't stain or chip. It can also be applied to both interiors and exterior floors. Walkways, bathrooms, entrances, driveways, living rooms and patios are all fair game.

When it's finished, stained concrete looks a little like marble, but more dappled and less uniform. The concrete will mostly be earthy brown tones, with hints of red and green. It's possible to make your own tint stain by mixing colors, or applying at dissimilar rates. When you stain a concrete floor, though, don't expect the stain to be uniform or have an even tone. Plan your room décor and color scheme accordingly, because you'll get dissimilar reactions from different areas of the concrete, and even a seasoned pro will be hard pressed to predict what the final result will be.

Surface prep for acid staining concrete depends on what condition your slab is in. Newly poured concrete only needs is be allowed time for curing- three weeks after pouring- then some rinsing and scrubbing. Older concrete is a different story. Thorough cleaning is required because any dirt, grease, paint, sealer or even curing agent will keep the stain from penetrating and reacting as it should. Do a little test area to make sure it's ready.

Newer poured concrete will require less stain than older floors, but in general, a gallon of water added to one gallon of stain will cover around 400 square feet. Apply the stain with a non-metallic brush or broom, working in the cooler morning or evening hours, rather than in the heat of the day. Be careful to protect yourself from spillage, drips and fumes from the acid stain, and follow the manufacturer's precautions.

After application, you need to cleanup by sweeping away any leftover stain and residue with a broom. When the floor is thoroughly dry, it is a good idea to apply a sealer agent and then wax it.

If you are in the market for natural stone flooring, a new look for your basement or patio, or just looking for new remodeling ideas, stained concrete is certainly something you should look into.

Low Cost Concrete Floor Staining

This is not an article for the research, how to acid wash concrete. For this reason, the same look for less than half the cost of acid staining!

First, you need to gather your supplies. You can find them in a local DIY store like Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware, etc. You need a solid concrete stain, I recommend two colors that complement each other, ie the tan and dark brown Sun Concrete Sealer is the different degrees of brightness, Decide whether you want to see a search of the property, the floor or slightly glossy, and sufficient to seal your floors 6-8 times. You will also need an economic gallon sprayer, just make sure it has an adjustable nozzle. A long-handled roller with a nap paint tray semi-smooth. And, of course, you need plastic tape to protect your paint and other industries. And a big piece of cardboard or tasting room, you do not mind ruining.

Second, remove all the furniture in theSpace and be sure to prepare the surface and the surrounding areas well. I recommend 4-6 feet from the wall so as to avoid over-spray and paint pen. Be sure to soak or really good, because all land that has developed on the ground are once you start on this.

Now you are ready to begin! Mix concrete stain color as separates, they must be mixed. Carefully pour the surface stainin your syringe. Once again and fix if necessary, ready to pump sprayer to spray. Test your pattern on some cardboard or other non-local mind is confused, I tried it on my garage floor. Make sure you plan, keep a few meters from the syringe, or patch of puddles get spots when looking from the injection. When you create are comfortable with you see, go to work on your soil to prepare. Remember, you're not trying tocompletely cover the ground, you want to try a natural stone. If you have the edge, I suggest you target a few meters from the ground to get to the edge and do not puddle, but the sketches are always looking to go. Make sure you work to take out the door in the corner ... You do not want to be waiting on them for 4 hours or so dry! Pour left over stain back into its original box and clean the syringe with it ready forThe color of your neighbor! The whole process should not take a long time, my 130 square feet of space attracted me only 45 minutes to one.

Then wait the recommended time before beginning the second layer. After the first coat is dry, repeat the procedure from the first layer, filling in areas that had less splatter and the areas which were on too much of another color. too dry for the second level to maintain. If you are shown the way in which your model is satisfied, go toSealing the floor. If you are not completely satisfied with your spot models are required to share the different colors until you are satisfied with the pattern. The sealant will not change the appearance, if you have a semi-gloss sealer will be held only so that does not scratch. I have three layers and the third layer, I have a hand sprayer, so I could get a fine mist and a smaller area to be feared, because the bleach spray covers a wider area.

When finished, pour yourSealed in a tray on wheels, a good deal on your role, you would like to paint and roll, the earth is forgotten. You yourself do not roll out of the room instead of in a corner! Then the recommended time to wait for the seal to dry, then wait with the rest of his hands for each layer to dry.

You're done! Take your plastic and floors, move back the furniture in the room and enjoy your place!

Concrete is environmentally friendly compared to many other forms of flooring. How it works?

There are two ways of staining the concrete used a slightly acidic solution, the other uses a pigment-based solution. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages.

In the first category are chemical stains, in fact, no particular color, but the color of concrete through a chemical reaction. The acid reacts with lime, mineral, and gives the agent in the concrete. ThisThe color is formed as a permanent bond, not chip or subtract. The best surfaces are acid pickling, as the depth of translucency is achieved by using multiple layers of color and surfaces.

The second category is the water solutions of acrylic pigments. They seem to soak in concrete and left their pigment. These are preferred by many because it is a wider range of colors, can be found as the impact of bullets. However, they did notat least as good, and certainly not the same color depth.

Staining my floor

Applying stain to the livingroom floor...and for all you 'haters' in comment-land, this is NOT a how-to video, so get over yourselves. And FYI, my method worked just fine, with no lap marks at all. The ambient temperature was about 15C, so the stain didn't flash off before I went back and wiped it, so blending between passes was no problem. And given that I didn't have a helper, this was the best technique for me (believe me- this wasn't the first room in the house I did!). The key was simply keeping the rhythm up and not waiting too long between passes. I did 230 sq. metres of pine flooring this way, and it all looks fine- but more importantly, I didn't pay a professional $75 an hour to do it! The crappy quality is due to being shot with the isight on my MBP, and edited in imovie. Usually I use pro gear for my videos, but this was just so my family (who was away while I renovated) could see what I was doing.

Surface treatment for acid staining will depend on the actual state of your plate isNew takes on poured concrete, is only allowed time for the healing of three weeks after casting, then some rinsing and scrubbing. Older concrete is a different story. A thorough cleaning is necessary because dirt, grease, paint, sealer or even curing stops the penetration of stains and react as it should. What is sure, with a small test area to make sure it is ready.

Modern concrete is poured less stain than older floors, but in general one gallonsWater to one gallon of stain covers approximately 400 square feet. Apply with a non-metallic brush or a broom spot to work in the cooler morning and evening hours, not in the heat of the day. Be careful to guard against leakage, drips and fumes from the acid stains, and follow the manufacturer's precautions.

After application, you need the elimination of sweeping any leftover stain and residue with a broom. If the soil completely dry, it is a good ideaApplying a sealing agent, and then the wax.

Staining Concrete

The coloring of cement is a solution of acid, water, inorganic salts, and the natural reaction of minerals already achieved in the concrete. It is a color process that takes on a cementitious surface.

Many people initially think it is a kind of paint, but the results are achieved through the manipulation of these effects to give the impression of colors. If they protected by a sealer or wax, it can be very durable, and acid stained concretewas with great effect, both internally and externally.

People are often surprised by the results achieved with the effects of acid stained concrete. This can be anything from a marble-look to a variety of earth tones. Many builders achieve this by mixing their own colors with different speeds. A matter of finding them quickly is that no two pieces of concrete still the same. Each surface is unique, so that the resulting reaction is always different.

This gives acid stainingas a useful and popular series of applications, is that everything is visible from the living room to driveways.

The biggest problem with the engineers and builders to face when it comes to acid staining, is the condition of the concrete surface. Age can not get to them, but certainly not the state. If the surface is Spalled is, the aggregate stones are showing through the concrete surface. You can crack or flaking, and this will mean the acid stain will neverreally on the surface.

Another reason for the acid stain will not work, it could be etched on the surface earlier than acid. This is because the aggregate stones do not react with the acid stain, and what you see is fit only for a reaction with materials in the concrete.

In the case of the concrete was coined coated or textured, a very effective color depth and realism can be achieved.

Low Cost Concrete Floor Staining

This is not an article for those who like acid wash concrete. The idea is to always look the same, for less than half the cost of the acid-staining!

First, you need to gather your supplies. You can at any local DIY store like Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware, etc. You'll need to find a solid concrete stain, I recommend two colors to each other thus a complementary tan and dark brown. Concrete sealer, which is so different gloss levelsto decide whether you are looking for a flat floor or your looking for a slightly shiny, and you have enough use to seal your floor 6-8 times viewed. You also need a cheap sprayer gallons, so make sure it has an adjustable nozzle. A long handled roller with a semi-professional color and smooth nap. Surfaces, and of course you are plastic and require a different painters tape to protect. And a big piece of cardboard or test room that you do not mind disarray.

Second, remove all furniture from the room and make sureYou prep your surface and the surrounding areas well. I recommend for 4-6 feet on the wall, so that you avoid over, spray paint and in contact with up to. Make sure you sweep or vacuum really well, for what it is on the ground, is always on the floor when the same process.

Now you are ready to begin! Mix concrete stain, as well as color, it separates and must be mixed. Cautiously your surface, pour in your spot sprayer. Replace cap andif necessary, pump sprayers to prepare for spraying. Test your pattern on some cardboard or another room you do not mind will mess up, I tried it on my garage floor. Be sure to keep the spray a few feet above the ground, otherwise you will get puddles stains when you click on Looking for splatters of discoloration. If you are with the look that you create, go to your prepared soil comfortable working. Remember, you are not trying to completely cover the groundtry for a natural stone look. Here I recommend the edges with the aim of a few feet from the floor all the way to get to the edge and not puddle, but you are looking to go for the splatter. Make sure you work yourself out the door, instead of in a corner ... You do not want to stand around and do not wait too dry for 4 hours or so! Pour left over, it is again in the original container stain and clean the syringe is ready for your next color! The entire processshould not take very long, my 130 square meters of space has to get dressed, only about 45 minutes a mantle.

Then the recommended time to wait before starting the second layer. After the first coat is dry, repeat the process from the first layer, filling in the areas that you had less splatter in and for the areas that you are too much of the other color. Here, too, wait until dry, the second layer. If you are with the way your pattern turned out to drive you happy with your floor seal. If younot entirely happy with the pattern color to keep layering the different colors until you are satisfied with the pattern. The sealer will not change the look, unless you have a semi-gloss sealer, it is easy to seal, to prevent scratching it. I have three layers and the third layer, I used a hand sprayer so I could get a fine mist and a smaller area of concern, because the bleach has Sprayer is a broader area.

When you are ready, pour your sealing in a roller tray, a good amountpaint on your role, just as you would, and then start rolling the floor. Again, do not forget yourself rolling out of rooms instead of in the corner! Then the recommended time to wait for the sealant to dry, then go with the rest of the waiting time between coats for each coat to dry.

Done! Remove the plastic back and floor coverings, furniture in the room, and enjoy your place!
