Picking The Right Paint For Your Bedroom

Painting Your Bedroom is an inexpensive way to get a whole new look, however some people find it to be an overwhelming task to choose a color or type of paint. Many simply stare at the thousands of color swatches in the store and then walk away confused without ever picking out a color!

If you want to paint your bedroom, the first step is to select a range of colors or color theme. That way, when you go into the store you can narrow down your selection of color swatches to those in that general color shade.

If you want your bedroom to evoke a certain mood, some colors have shown to be better at evoking certain emotions or moods. Calming colors are soft colors - blues, greens, and lavenders in a muted shade. Anything too vivid or bright will not be calming. If you are decorating to have a calming effect these colors go quite well together. You could punch it up a bit with some brighter accents in the same colors but with a different tone. I like a sage green for the walls with some light sky blues and lavenders sprinkled around the rooms Bedding, wall coverings and flooring can be a solid color to keep the calm mood going. Accent with candles and perhaps a table top waterfall.

On the other hand, you might want to paint your bedroom so that it energizes. Maybe you want to wake up in the morning ready to go! Then you might want to try bright colors like reds and yellows with maybe a bit of orange thrown in. I love the look of deep red walls even if it may take several coats to cover! Yellow and orange make a nice color combination - maybe a bit 70's so you could do a nice retro design with these colors. Tone it down a bit by using brown as an accent. Of course, you can always use red with black and white for a classically contemporary look. And there's always a white room (bedding, walls, and floors) with bright red, yellow, blue and orange accents for a mid century feel that will liven up the place.

For a more elegant type of bedroom, you may opt for tans of off whites. These can match very well with some darker, rich colors like maroon, gold, or even black. Use some deep jewel tones to create a romantic but calming feeling. Gray and brown can be a nice modern color palette - use deep colors not light and you will be surprised how this can give the room a cozy feel that is a bit more modern.

Another choice you may have to make is if you want to use traditional paints or get an effect on your walls with special effect paints. You can add texture to your walls with paints that have texture build in, or use special paint to get the look of marble or old world plaster.
Some of these use solvent based glazes and others have specially made paint just for that particular look you want. A trip to your local Home Depot will find these paints as well as free classes on how to apply them.

Concrete Molds - What Are They?

Concrete molds have always been popular for working with concrete. They can be made of a number of different types of materials. A couple of factors determine which one is most suitable for the job you want to do. These include the area that you'll be working with, the size of the job, and what type of look you're after.

Latex molds are very popular because they're so easy to use. As soon as it comes out of the container, it's ready to go. This is its main advantage. There is basically little or no preparation required, so you can focus your time and effort on getting the design right. One problem with latex molds, however, is that they do sometimes shrink a little in size. Making a latex mold can also take a fair bit of time. It also takes a long time to dry, which usually means that you can't usually make use of the mold on the same day you make it, which can be a nuisance.

Another very popular material for concrete molds is polysulfide rubber. This is a two component material that's been a favorite in the industry for a long time. One of the big advantages of this material is that it lasts a long time. It's also quite stretchable, which makes it easy to form the mold exactly the way you want it. However, be warned - the big downside of working with polysulfide rubber is that it smells rather offensive. It might be a good idea to practice holding your breath before using it for a concrete mold!

These are certainly the two most popular materials for making concrete molds, but there are others. If you want to find out more about how to make a concrete mold, check out your local hardware store or spend some time searching the Internet. There's lots of books and article available to help you learn how to make a mold that will be just right for your needs.

Staining my floor

Applying stain to the livingroom floor...and for all you 'haters' in comment-land, this is NOT a how-to video, so get over yourselves. And FYI, my method worked just fine, with no lap marks at all. The ambient temperature was about 15C, so the stain didn't flash off before I went back and wiped it, so blending between passes was no problem. And given that I didn't have a helper, this was the best technique for me (believe me- this wasn't the first room in the house I did!). The key was simply keeping the rhythm up and not waiting too long between passes. I did 230 sq. metres of pine flooring this way, and it all looks fine- but more importantly, I didn't pay a professional $75 an hour to do it! The crappy quality is due to being shot with the isight on my MBP, and edited in imovie. Usually I use pro gear for my videos, but this was just so my family (who was away while I renovated) could see what I was doing.

A Quick Guide For the Process of Painting Your Concrete Floor

Garage and concrete floors can be made to look neat and well kept by painting it. The right material for this is epoxy paint or coating. This may prove hard sometimes but with proper technique, you can do the work light.

Here's how you paint your garage and concrete floor with epoxy paint:

· Complete cleaning.

See to it that you sweep or blow away all dirt and loose debris from the area to be painted. Likewise, clean fully the surrounding areas of dirt, leaves, debris and other materials that could come through the garage door to soil your floor again.

After sweeping, you have to wash the complete surface to be coated using a pressure washer. Preferably, use the one with between 2500 and 3500 psi. It is important, however, to be extra careful as pressure water can cut into the concrete. If you don't own a pressure washer, you can easily rent one from rental centers.

For areas that are heavily greased and heavy residues exist, a de-greaser solution can be applied to the surface. Scrub and wash thoroughly after use, again using your pressure washer.

· Check your concrete floor.

It is very important to check and examine the surface closely. This way, you may be able to find for cracks, the low or high spots and other damage or defects in the surface. You need to repair these if you want best results.

For very fine cracks, epoxy coating can fill and bond these. However, when you encounter larger cracks, jagged or deep cracks, you need to use crack filler or patching these with epoxy/concrete patching kit. There may also be a need to grind out the concrete. For low spots in the concrete floor, epoxy patching compound may be applied and trowel mix on the surface.

· Etch your concrete floor.

After pressure washing, de-greasing if necessary, and undertaking necessary repairs in uneven areas, you need to etch the concrete floor. This is necessary to let the epoxy floor coating bind with the underlying concrete floor.

In doing this, mix the same amount of muriatic acid and water, then, disperse this over the entire surface of the concrete floor. Let it stand for 20 minutes after which you rinse the floor completely with clean and clear water until all acid has been washed away.

· Mixing your paint.

You may need to know how to mix your epoxy paint. For a 2- gallon mix of epoxy, pour equal amount of "Part A" and "Part B" into a clear 5-gallon plastic bucket. Use a Jiffy Mixer or a mixing paddle to mix at a low speed of 1/2" drill. Mix at the bottom and never lift the mixer or paddle in or out as this will infuse air into the mixture. The mixing must be done only for 3 to 3 ½ minutes, no more, no less.

· Applying your Epoxy paint

You start to apply your paint from the farthest point from the door(s), this using a paint brush. You paint your way out of the garage to free you from walking in wet paint and move around materials and not destroying the paint. In the first coating, apply wet epoxy to only wet epoxy until the entire surface has been coated. Do your painting in small portions in order that the epoxy will not easily dry up. To apply for 2nd coating, wait for 2 to 3 hours until the first coating is already dry.

Given the right work and proper material used, your garage flooring can give you lasting satisfaction.

New Market Trends to Floor You

After all these years of having hardwood floors that are mid brown and easy to clean, the word is that new, pale floors will be sweeping the market. These lighter floors have been popular in Europe and are just being introduced over here in North America.

Lighter toned floors do have their advantages, of course, one of them being that instant 'lift' of lightness and brightness that permeates the room. Another is that they might raise the value of shares in floor cleaning products! Yes, there is no doubt about it, paler floors need more upkeep and so is the extra maintenance worth it?

A spokesman for BuildDirect who has just returned from this year's "Surfaces" trade show said that the lighter influence which was from the European designs was 'everywhere'. However, this does not mean that flooring manufacturers are suggesting that we all switch to light oak wood!

There were many new innovative ideas on display that could be adapted to all types of flooring. Perhaps do-it-yourselfers could even adapt their present flooring to imitate some of the new looks that were on display.

This may not be too difficult because some of the most popular looks that were demonstrated at the exhibition showed flooring that had a faded or distressed appearance. Of course some of us had trendy floors without even knowing it as we already had this distressed look!

But on a more serious note, whether the flooring was of ceramic tile, wood or vinyl, the latest trade show exhibited all of these mediums in light colors, or faded colors. Some of the finishes had a gray-washed effect or a white-washed look, reminiscent of the old scrubbed floors of a farmhouse.

For those unfamiliar with the look of white-washed floors, it means that there is almost a dusting of gray or white color over top of the wood, but that the wood is still visible beneath.

In the old kitchens the wood would already have faded to a weathered gray color, and the left-over whitewash that was applied to the outside brickwork was often watered down and slopped over the floor to 'freshen it up' each spring.

Laminate floorings will be following the market trend and anticipate the early launching of new products to meet the expected demand. Wood grain porcelain tiles are also becoming popular and they are easier to maintain than real wood tiles.

The whole idea of flooring is changing as more and more people are becoming more adventurous and even applying flooring to the walls and ceilings! The introduction of light weight products such as cork and bamboo has meant that it can be applied anywhere.

Stone is also being used on the wall and slate flooring and porcelain are often used on walls, behind fireplaces and stoves and on chimneys. Applying cork to the walls in any room is a mild form of insulation as cork will hold the warmth in a room. It has often been used on office walls and offers one large cork board on which to pin up memos!

Newly built homes are the ones where the latest in market trends first appear, so with the expectation of this new look of white-washed or gray-washed floors, should we anticipate that the minimalist look may disappear?

White or gray 'washed' floors are reminiscent of the old country farmhouses in Provence, France. There the large wooden table in the middle of the room is scrubbed daily and matches the bleached look of the wooden floor. Does this mean that the French country kitchen look will be creeping back?

Quick Step Laminate Flooring - Discover 10 Secrets Behind This Success Story

Quick Step Laminate Flooring has changed the face of floors forever. The Quick Step Uniclic ranges are accessible to even the clumsiest laminate flooring installation novice. The real wood looks, textures and tints are so realistic, that the neighbors are likely to think that you had a team of yesteryear's artisans working their fingers to the bone on your new real wood floors. Instead, you will secretly know that it actually was a hubby and wife team toiling for little less than a day with the help of a few boxes of glueless planks.

What gives this line its unique looks? Why is this range proudly displayed in upper-class homes all over the world? Why is it first on many an interior designer's top-rated surfacing list? Apart from the quality inner core and the Uniclic design, the finishes spill the beans about the secrets behind this company's remarkable success.

1. Authentic

Have you ever seen two pieces of wood that are identical? Most likely not. Just as no two humans are exactly alike, every piece of wood comes with a uniquely patterned grain and texture. The Authentic Quick Step Laminate Flooring finish is a surface coating that highlights the motif of the wood pattern. You will see the effect in the grain lines of an oak finish, the matte looks of maple, and the gloss of a cherry laminate floor. This line brings the diversity of nature right into your home.

2. Contour Artisanal

With Contour Artisanal, the manufacturer brings the end-result of a laminate flooring installation even closer to the real thing. Each and every plank gets the recessed edge treatment that emulates hand-scraped floors. You can't get much closer to nature than this!

3. Natural Variation

What sets today's floor surfaces apart from the first efforts, is the variations incorporated into the designs. Previously the same patterns were repeated over and over again, giving a 'plastic' look to the floors. With Quick Step Laminate Flooring's Natural Variation patterning, this problem disappears. Each design comes with 18 or 54 wood grain patterns, combined with a diverse range of natural tints. This mimics the natural appearance of wood almost perfectly.

4. SML 3-Optic

These laminates take convenience and a real wood appearance one step further in the Elegance range. Here the clever home remodeling folks give you the perfect balance of three ready-cut plank lengths (small, medium and large) in each pack. What can be easier than this? By using this line, you are virtually guaranteed that the end result of your project will be as close as possible to the real thing. You can just click and go. No worries about producing the right number of each length.

5. Micro-Perspective 4

With Micro-Perspective 4 the Elegance small planks and the Quadra natural stone range get a further reality dose from the Quick Step Laminate Flooring guys. The finest grooves of the planks and tiles are treated to the same design process as the surface layer. The result is an extremely natural look.

6. Perspective 4

This technology subtly creates a v-groove as you click the planks together. In addition, the beveled sides add to the realistic finish. Again the color and design of the surface is repeated in the grooves, adding to the real wood appearance.

7. Country Surface

With the Country Surface finish, Quick Step floors manages to instill qualities in its planks previously associated with artisans and years of craftsmanship. The master touch is clear in each carefully constructed plank.

8. Living Surface

True to its name, this finish adds a wonderful woodgrain structure to the rustic designs. It is also responsible for the natural finish of the Uniclic ceramic tile ranges.

9. Natural Authentic

Innovation is a Quick Step Laminate Flooring trademark. Thanks to the unique Natural Authentic finish, you not only see real down-to-earth woodgrain in the designs, it also adds a more realistic texture to the planks. This is accomplished without doing away with the durability of the surface. If you were under the impression that laminates are not for you, touch a Natural Authentic finish plank and instantly experience a change of mind...

10. Accessories

The finishes are only as good as your final touches with the quality, decorative accessories and moldings Quick Step Laminate Flooring has available in abundance. Installation of the moldings is easy with the clip system. The color palette tones in with your interior design. Popular Faux Painting Techniques

Add some color, depth, elegance and charm to your home using one or more of these popular faux painting techniques.

*Combing - Combing can give your walls a very dramatic look. First step is to paint your walls your base color and let dry completely - overnight is best. Next, mix your texture color with finishing glaze. Now when you start rolling on your next color, be sure and go from ceiling to floor for about three feet. Next, you take a dry comb or a wallpaper brush and drag it from ceiling to floor in one continuous motion. Wipe off your comb and repeat.

Straight lines are just one of your options with the combing technique. You can do a basket weave look, create a plaid pattern or use your imagination and come up with your own unique design!

*Sponging - Sponging is a very easy and fun technique that gives a room a pretty textured look. You first want to choose your base color. This can be any color of your choice. Prepare the walls and apply the base paint. Be sure and fill in nail holes or other imperfections for a smooth finish. Let dry overnight.

After the base coat is dry, you are ready to begin sponging. You can sponge one, two or more colors. It is up to you. Be sure you have an actual sea sponge, not a synthetic sponge. Always keep your sponge damp for smooth application.

Mix the paint with a finishing glaze. Dip the sponge in the paint but do not "over dip". Remove excess paint. Start in the corner and work your way out. Lightly dab the sponge in a random pattern. Do small areas at a time so the paint does not dry where you are working. Be creative with your color combinations and your dabbing patterns. Make those walls come alive!

*Ragging - Ragging is similar to sponging and can produce a very soft, romantic look. Try your rag in several different positions to get the desired effect. Paint the wall with your base color and let dry overnight. Mix your texture color with a glaze finish to soften. Soak your rag in the glaze mixture and blot off the excess. Start dabbing the rag on the wall in various patterns. Add more paint to the rag when it becomes dry.

You can produce a soft effect with less paint or you can use more paint to create a dramatic effect. You can experiment with other materials as well to get a different effect - paper bags, plastic bags, canvas, etc.

*Crackling - This painting technique produces a distressed, aged look. Paint your wall with the chosen base color. Keep in mind that this color will show through your "crackle" cracks. Let dry overnight. Cover your walls with a crackle faux finish. Let dry until there is no tackiness. This will take about 4 hours. Now you will need to apply a second coat being careful not to overlap your brush strokes. In a few minutes the paint will start to crackle exposing your base color underneath.

For fine cracks use a thinner topcoat and for heavier crackling use a thicker topcoat. This technique is great for furniture as well.

*Color Washing - Color washing can give a room a smooth, flowing, graceful look. Paint your walls your base color and let dry overnight. Mix your second color with a faux finish glaze. Start painting with short, overlapped strokes. The more varied and random, the better. Let dry. If you have chosen a third color, repeat the process.

Faux Painting Tips

Practice on some scrap boards or cardboard before you try it on your walls. This will give you some practice and allow you to get comfortable with the technique.

Always have enough supplies on hand and be sure to have everything you need to do the job.

Tape your baseboards, windows, etc. with painter's tape to prevent accidents.

Take your time and be sure to pick out the right colors. You wouldn't want to change your mind in the middle of the job and have to start all over.

Most of all relax and have fun. You will love the look these painting techniques can give your home and be proud that you did it yourself!

How to Find the Best Flooring Prices

Lets face it, buying flooring is not a daily activity that's why you need to be informed in making the right decision. Because once you have your flooring installed, you'll probably will end up using it for 5 to 10 years depending on the type of flooring.

That's why you need to know about the what, why and how. Here are a few flooring considerations that may help you in your decision for the right floor.

o Flooring Traffic

One of the major considerations is traffic volume, simply ask yourself how frequent do you think that a certain area in your home or office will be used. There are a number of choices for flooring and usually different grades within each type. In selecting an appropriate flooring choice, traffic volume is a significant consideration to insure durability and to avoid high maintenance requirements. Areas which have outside access or serve as passages require special attention.

o Flooring Usage

Selection of flooring choice should also consider how the room is used. Areas frequented by children might call for a softer surface and areas used for frequent entertainment might call for a higher level of stain resistance. It's a good practice to revisit all your areas in the home and make observation from a usage perspective.

o Flooring Types

While appearance is probably your first consideration, the type of flooring material selected should consider the environment to achieve long term satisfaction. Each of the primary flooring materials can present a variety of appearance. Most searched flooring types are: Hardwood floors, laminate floors, tile flooring vinyl flooring and carpets.

Successfully Preparing The Basement Floor For Your Basement Remodeling Project

Preparing the floor of your basement for basement remodeling may involve first removing paint. Actually there are two ways the job can be handled, but neither one is fully delightful. Most standard paint removers will do the trick. Fumes are quite unpleasant and even dangerous so take the time to do your basement remodeling properly.

If you select this method, use all safety precautions. Provide plenty of ventilation (using fans to force the movement of air if necessary), cover up well to protect your skin and wear goggles so none of the remover can splatter in your eyes. Following the instructions on the label, apply the remover, allow sufficient time for it to work and then mop up the paint. The easiest system is to use a rubber squeegee on a long handle; basement remodeling shouldn't have to be overly hard work, so make sure you get a handle long enough to suit your height.

You may prefer to apply a wash-away remover so that the chemical and softened paint can be hosed down the drain. One word of caution: Some removers leave a waxy film behind. If the instructions suggest that you mop the clean floor with denatured alcohol after it is free of paint, be sure to do it. Otherwise, the film of wax will prevent any finish from sticking to the surface and this will be a significant hiccup to your basement remodeling.

The other system requires a floor sanding machine. Hook a belt of very rough paper onto the drum and start grinding away. The noise will be horrendous and the dust billowy, but the method does avoid the need for widespread application of chemicals. Here again there are safety precautions. Wear a mask over your nose and mouth so that you don't breathe in the fine dust. Don't let this basement remodeling project be your last.

Other problems involving basement floors

There are a couple of other common problems involving basement floors. Quite frequently the cement surface will be perfectly sound but the top layer continually turns to powder and comes off in a fine dust. You can sweep the surface from now to next St. Swithen's day and never get all the dust up. The wise basement remodeling person will seek a solution for this.

The best solution is a surface hardener. You'll find this sold at most building supply companies and lumberyards (Dus-Top is one brand and some other firms make similar products). Following the instructions on the label, swab it onto the concrete. It will harden it so you can successfully paint the floor or put down tile.

How about holes and cracks in the floor? These repairs aren't hard. Your best bet here is a rubberized concrete. Use a preparation such as U.S. Rubber's Laticrete (again there are other brands). Mix the liquid rubber with a dry packaged concrete mix instead of using water. The end result is a concrete mortar that will stick like crazy to the old concrete, even in a thin layer. It also has good water and weather resistance. After you have chipped out the loose or crumbling cement, trowel in the rubberized mixture and smooth it off just as you would the standard material. You will always be satisfied with a good job if you take your basement remodeling project seriously enough to address problems such as this.

Building on Concrete

Fastening anything up to the concrete walls or floors is not like pounding a nail into nice gentle wood. You can fasten into cement using plugs of various types.

Any kind of expanding plug must fit into a carefully drilled hole in the masonry. If you have the strength and determination of a mad dog, you can do this with a star drill and a hammer. Hold the drill in position and whong it with the hammer. Give the drill a slight turn and hit it again. Keep up this process until you have pounded the proper depth hole. Diameter of the hole depends on the size of the star drill and you'll find this information detailed on the shank. If you have a number of holes for your basement remodeling project and you are on your own, be sure to break up hammering work with other tasks.

Or you can invest a buck or so in a good quality carbide tip bit for use with an electric drill. These are tipped with a very hard material that actually bites through the rugged cement. Split the cost with your neighbour and you'll get a tool for two basement remodeling projects for the price of one!

Expanding fasteners or plugs come in several types. Most common and quite reliable is a lead anchor. But then, you will find the shelves at your local hardware loaded with plugs of plastic, fiber, etc. They all work in the same manner.

These tips should get you started on your basement remodeling.

Garage Epoxy Concrete Floor Coating

Protecting your garage concrete floors with an epoxy coating is a great idea. Without a protective coat your floor will crack, chip, and stain over time. Get yourself an epoxy coat and protect your investment to prolong the life of your garage/basement floors.

Application

There are many applications with an epoxy, you can apply to a new floor, or fill in chips and cracks on old floors. Epoxy comes as a primer and top coat. Epoxy coating is resistant to automobile fluids and chemicals.

A concrete floor urethane sealer can also be used. Urethane sealers are high-gloss. They also involve putting down a primer and a topcoat. The topcoat is clear, but pigment may be added. Urethane sealers are often used in retail stores and show rooms.

There are other type of coats that you can try, like the oil-based, but its not recommended. The more popular brand is the water-based like the Aquapoxy epoxy coating. This is made for residential, commercial, and heavy industrial use.

Another reason to use an epoxy coating on your concrete floors is due to the exposure of moisture. There is moisture available during the installation of the flooring. Many methods to lessen the chance of moisture exposure, but its not 100%. That's why finishing a coat with a quality epoxy coating like, Mono Epoxy TS-200 from Top Secret Coatings. The specs are military compliant which means its durable and gives your concrete floor an immaculate look that your neighbor would be envious of.

My 78 RPM almanac haul! 12/19/08

During my Christmas Vacation, I went to an antique mall in Franklin Indiana that I hadnt been to in nearly a year. Most of the records hadnt changed, so I grabbed just a couple 78's and headed for checkout. The lady who owns the place said 'Wanna see more records?'. I didnt know when I said 'yes' that it would be costing me about 5 hours of my time and over $70. But boy, was it worth it. What she showed me was a small, closed off concrete wall, concrete floor room in the basement which contained an estimated 5-7000 78's. All from a single estate sale. So returned the next morning at opening, and spent about 5 hours there going through every last record in the room. As I did so, The owner would cme down to chat with me (we had alot of great conversation aside from the world of records). During these talks, she informed me that the family of the man whom owned these records had already picked through them, taking 'about 20 elvis records and a whole bunch of adult records and KKK stuff'. Ugh. I felt stripped of all energy. But I am so glad I carried on sorting, as it would still end up being a payoff. This video is of just a few of those finds. EDIT: i returned to this store exactly one year to the day later and it was gone :( Guess I wont have a chance to go through all those records again.

Aluminum Formwork

www.wallties.com WTF aluminum formwork is a rapid paced construction system for forming cast in place concrete structures. WTF provides aluminum formwork for reinforced concrete construction of single and multi-story buildings and enables the walls and slab to be placed monolithically in the same operation. This increases efficiency, and also produces an extraordinarily strong structure with excellent concrete finish. Due to the fine tolerances achieved in the aluminum formwork components, consistent concrete shapes and finishes are obtained floor after floor, building after building, conforming to the most exacting standards of quality and accuracy. This allows plumbing and electrical fittings to be prefabricated with the certain knowledge that there will be an exact fit when formwork is assembled. The dimensional accuracy of the concrete work also results in consistent fittings of doors and windows. The smooth finish of the concrete greatly reduces or eliminates the need for costly plastering. The WTF formwork system has been used in the construction of hundreds of thousands of structures including residential and commercial structures in single story, low rise, and high-rise construction. It has been proven to be very successful in the construction of mass housing projects worldwide. It is fast, simple, adaptable and very cost effective. The Beauty of Self Leveling Concrete

Self leveling concrete is an amazing product. The beauty of self leverers is that you can control the height of your floor. They can also be stained and sealed. Mapei makes a self leveling product that can level smooth as glass with almost zero shrinkage. Other companies are working on similar products.

During the past week I filmed the installation of Mapei self leveling concrete in a new restaurant. It was the only flooring solution that would work.

One of the issues was that there was little thought about the floor until late in the project. This happens a lot. Flooring should be the first consideration in every project then design and build from there, not the other way around.

All the moldings were already in and painted. Tile had been installed in the kitchen leaving a height issue where it meets the main floor. Entrance door had been installed leaving little height for flooring below the door. All the doorways had a height issue at the transition.

The self leveling concrete solved all the height issues. The self leveler was poured thin, slightly more than 1/4 inch. A guage rake is used to pull the concrete to the exact height. The guage rake has feet that can be adjusted to the exact height you need.

It's amazing to watch. The self leveling concrete is very wet and flows to an even flat surface. Then a "Smoother" is used to flatten out even more. The Smoother is a tool that has flat edge on a pole that is pulled over the surface.

The floor looked awesome when complete. It took 3 people about 90 minutes to resurface 1200 square feet. When complete you could see a perfect transition at all the doorways, entrance door could swing open freely, transition to tile in kitchen was perfect.

The next day dark brown Acetone concrete dyes were sprayed randomly on the floor. Then a diluted brown concrete acid stain was sprayed over the entire floor and left on for 1 hour. Then they rinsed the acid stain to stop the chemical reaction with the concrete and to remove any residue.

The final step in the coloring process was application of diluted brown water based concrete dyes over the entire floor. The process was a combination of spraying then evening out the dye with a thick microfiber mop.

The next day the self leveling concrete was sealed with 2 coats of a solvent based concrete sealer.

The last step which brought it all together was application of a high solids floor finish. Once the second coat was applied the floor came alive.

The final result was a highly functional, decorative, low maintenance floor. One very unique feature is the importance of wall color and lighting. The floor picked up reds from the awning outside. Copper panels reflected a copper color onto the floor. This is a feature that is not achieved from other flooring products and is critical when working with decorative concrete.

There were imperfections as with all decorative concrete floors. But generally the floor was a thing of beauty. Any imperfections would not be evident since 80% over the floor would be covered with tables and chairs.

Painting Wood Flooring in 5 Simple Steps

If your hardwood flooring is covered in stains and scratches then you may decide to paint over it rather that rip them up or cover them with carpet. If your wood floor is in perfect condition think very carefully as to whether you really want to paint over them because if you change your mind it will require a lot of hard work to sand them down.

5 Steps to Painting Your Wooden Flooring

1# Sand and Clean

Your floors need to be well sanded to remove previous coats of varnish or urethane. Also give the floors a good clean to remove dirt, dust, hairs etc as you don't want it getting into your paint.

2# Repair Your Floor

To make your floors look their best, fill in any gaps between the boards, fill in any holes with wood filler and also make sure to remove nails that may be sticking up.

3# Priming Sealer

Use a roller or paint brush to apply a primer to the wood. If you are painting your floors a dark color then you may want to use a tinted primer.

4# Paint the Wood

You must make sure that the primer is totally dry before you even think about applying any coats of oil-based paint. You will also need to let each layer of paint dry before applying the next layer.

5# Polyurethane

Now that you have applied two coats of paint you then need to apply at least three coats of polyurethane to make sure that your floorboards keep in good condition.

Back in the 17th century the Upper classes installed decorative parquet flooring however this was very expensive for most people so painting their floors became the next best thing. When painting your floors you don't need to limit yourself to just one colour. You may want to look into designs such as squares or use a stencil to create a decorative border.

The Handbook to Marble Restoration

When it comes to commercial marble restoration in boca there are presently many methods that are being used in order to bring back the natural beauty and shine of your stone flooring. Sanding with diamond abrasives is the most durable polishing method and is currently the only choice for marble restoration. Basically this method involves grinding down the floor with apparatus named commercial grade diamond abrasive pads. Consequently successively finer pads are also utilized in order to bring about a mirror-like shine. On the other hand, polishing powders can also produce very effective results for the reason that this method also brings off a similar shine. At the same time, this is a commendable choice when it comes to good regular maintenance.

Coatings like wax and urethane are also used as quick and easy fixes. On the other hand they are also considered to be more of a problem than a solution for the reason that these coatings actually prevent the stone from breathing. Your stone floors may in fact be damaged by the chemicals and other materials used for stripping the coating off the marble flooring. In the end, they may only make the problem worse since these finishes are not entirely reliable and so the best approach is not use coatings in the first place. No matter which method is used, the most important thing is for you to regularly polish your marble flooring because once the finish fades into a dull surface then it is in fact more difficult to bring the shine back. It actually takes you three or four more times.

Fortunately for the modern household services such as marble restoration boca are now being offered. In the beginning, non-polished limestone, granite and marble were popularly utilized as flooring for the reason that they were practically inexpensive building material not to mention highly durable and were very easy to maintain. At the same time, due to the unpolished finish, the flooring only required sweeping and mopping in order to keep it clean. However, eventually styles change and manufacturing processes as well. As a result there are now improvements in flooring, making them more beautiful and elegant. Your floors are a crucial part to your home and so it is certainly understandable that you want your floors to be well-maintained and long-lasting. You wish to see highly polished stone and mirror-like finishes. To have this kind of finish, there is now an increased cost in both raw materials and maintenance in order to keep your floors beautifully polished.

To maintain your stone flooring, it is essential for you to be familiar with the details of standard maintenance especially with the techniques that were specialized to polish those stone floors. This is done in order for you to build a proper maintenance program that will not only suit your needs but also keep your floor in its original condition. At the same time, you should also be familiar with the different types of stone that are mainly used for flooring such as marble, granite and limestone. Marble comes in a wide range of colors usually with veins and variant colors running through it and ranges from soft to very hard. Granite has little or no veining and can have solid backgrounds with shiny specks or flecks of crystals throughout the surface while limestone usually ranges in color from gray to buff and is usually consistent in color with little or no veining. Professionals that deal with floor restorations also offer other extra features like carpet cleaning services boca.

How to Decide Which Concrete is Right For Your Home

Renovating your home or building an addition to the home not only comes with expense, but also a number of decisions. If you are considering using cement as part of your building or renovation project, you have to think about what type of concrete you will use.

There are a few different types of concrete so it is important to know about each type before you make your purchase. The following are the different types of concrete available:

Dry Ready mix: This cement is dry and comes in a bag. One has to add water as directed on the bag. It can be used for a wide variety of projects. It is often chosen for small work projects. It is a popular choice because it is easy to mix and apply.

Ready Mix: This type of compact exists already mixed in water. It is normally delivered and used right away. A concrete/cement company will usually bring the cement and pour it. It is good for small and medium size projects.

Transit Mix Compact: This involves a concrete truck bringing premixed concrete which is ready to be used. It is great for very large products and usually involves only one concrete pour. It is a bit expensive but good for foundations and large cement slabs. May concrete companies have a minimum order amount and ready to work with.

Bulk dry materials: This type of monolithic is normally used by those who have experience mixing concrete. It is useful for large products that one does not mixing a lot of cement themselves.

When using a decorative monolithic, the following lists the basic types of concrete:

1. Etching Pre-Designed Cement Slabs: This type of concrete contains etchings of various designs through the surface of the concrete. This type of concrete is often used on walls. Etchings can be varying designs such as a classical design or a more contemporary design. The choice depends on how well it will go with the design of the rest of the room.

2. Stamping Concrete: This type of cement that has a pattern on it known as a 'stamp.' It is popular for use on concrete floors. It adds a pleasant decor to the room and is very affordable. People will add this type of cement on top of their old concrete.

3. Sandblasting Concrete: This type of solid application involves blasting small sand-like particles on the concrete surface to give a more texture feel and look. You will have to use a sandblasting device and wear a mask to prevent inhalation of the blasting particles. It is a bit expensive, but it looks very nice when the blasting is complete

When choosing the appropriate concrete for your project, you not only have to pick the right concrete for the project, but you have to know what type of concrete is normally used for projects like yours. As well, you need to know if you can mix it yourself and apply it, or have a professional do it, and how much concrete you need.

There are various types of concrete mixes for large projects such as putting in a foundation, or smaller projects such as adding decorative cement slaps to the property such as a walkway. No matter what type of project you have, there is concrete available that will meet your needs.

Stopping Basement Floor Leakage

Applying a little bit of waterproof masonry sealer you can stop any kind of leakage in your basement floor or prevent it from leaking in near or distant future. You will get cement like solution after mixing the sealer with water. Make the area on the wall where you want to use the sealer, moist and then apply the solution on it.

Before you apply the solution make sure the area where the seal is going to be applied is clean. To achieve the best effect follow the instructions provided to you during your purchase meticulously after the sealer is mixed.

You can stuff the cracks and holes on concrete walls with masonry sealers to protect the wall. Just with a slap of the mixture of masonry sealer fill-in the cracked area. If you have a deeper than an eighth of an inch hole make sure before applying coatings to fill it up properly or you might not get a quality result.

For effective sealing up of damaged areas in houses, mortar sand, concrete trowel, cement, sponge sand, paint roller cleaning tools and wired brushes are some of the best tools that can be used. Similarly before beginning the work it's a good idea to clean area where repairing or improving.

To block the outside of brick walls and/or concrete walls from leaking and protecting it, masonry paint is a right choice. You will need to thoroughly clean the walls areas before applying a coat of paint on the walls. You will require a wired wheel attachment, drill and wired brush if you're cleaning concrete or brick walls. You will need to apply one or two primer coating on the area after cleaning it and before applying paint. The primer smoothens the area and thus progressively helps the process of painting.

Protecting the home from the changes in weather is the primary objective of making home repair and home improvement. Remember you are restoring, preserving or building your home's equality when you are spending time and money repairing or improving it.

When sum repairs or improvements are done, it not only provides equality for your home but also preserves an already existing one.

Most people don't make any improvements because they don't feel they can spend thousands of dollars of their hard earned money on maintenance costs. Others even go to the extent of drawing up a second loan for making repairs and improvements on their houses related to basement flooring. This continuous act of taking loan can land you in more debt than you can allow. In most cases nearly anything in the house can be repaired or improved by spending only a few bucks. The only place that requires a bit of heavy expenditure is the bathroom fixtures. Everything else is not really that costly unlike what people tend to believe.

Even the expensive price tag is more tolerable than tackling the problem of leakage that will cost more than an expensive fixture if it goes unfixed. Easily installable shower kits cost about four hundred dollars. All the information that you require for installing is systematically provided on the kit itself. Removing crude that is eating away your walls by solution and stopping shower leakage by tightening the screws is an easy enough work.

Flooring - Smart Flooring For a Comfortable Home!

Apart from the furniture and the decoration, there is another thing that can definitely alter the look of your home. Flooring has the ability to change the look of a room drastically. Proper planned usage of exact type of flooring would ensure that the room got the exact mood setting.

There are thousands of ways you can get the floor done up, there are varied choices you can make, you can use 100% organic products to decorate the rooms, or else you can use something like laminate flooring, which do have the classy look but are easier and lot more affordable to maintain or change.

However, if you are not too worried about money and are not interested in changing floors again and again, and are ready to make that one time expensive choice, then stone flooring are the best. Stone flooring from marble to granite can come in a varied choice. Stone flooring are very convenient; firstly you do not require maintaining or oiling these flooring for years, all you need is cleaning which can be very easily done. You have the choice of mopping or washing these floors. Stone flooring do not make much sense if you are staying in cold climate because stone tends to become very cold, unlike wood which tends to warm up the place.

Most elegant and highly appreciated is the hardwood flooring, though not as durable as the stone flooring, hardwood flooring offers you the touch of style and a guarantee that this floor will last a long time to come. Hardwood flooring is ideal when it comes to roughing it out. You can use it for years without really damaging it. You do require polishing and a little bit of maintenance now and then but then that's it for this flooring.

Hardwood though, is becoming expensive by the day, and environment lovers would not be very happy to get the trees cut in order to decorate their homes, well there is an alternative, you can check out the new type of flooring that has become highly famous, it is naturally grown but it really does not require cutting down trees, this is the bamboo furniture. A good bamboo hardly takes less than a year or some months rather to grow, once grown and processed for the flooring to be made; these look as elegant and as attractive as hardwood flooring.

The color of flooring and carpets can make a room look bigger or smaller, not just the walls, but the floor too reflects light and that plays a huge role in making a room look fresh, large and airy or small and damp or even depressing. People for whom sunlight is precious should try flooring which is most likely to reflect light, this will also make the room seem happier.

Garage Floor Protection

Basic garage floor protection is all about keeping your floor looking good. Corrosive materials like road salt, engine oil, battery acid and antifreeze can quickly deteriorate any concrete surface whether it is your garage or workshop. An industrial style mat is one option as it reduces dust traveling about and is easy to clean and move around as well. You can clean it where it sits or take it outside and give it a good cleaning. Soap and water is best used for a mat.

Another form of garage floor protection is roll matting. This particular product covers the entire floor area. It is a specific type of vinyl made for a concrete floor area such as a garage or workshop. It is easy to clean, protects your area from dirt, moisture, and spills. It is also slip resistant and esthetically pleasing. It does cost more than basic mats though.

Garage tiles are a more expensive form of garage floor protection. They snap together and are quite strong and rugged. They come in different sizes and can cover the entire floor space or just certain areas you want covered or protected. They also offer some slip resistance as well.

Another common form of garage floor protection is an epoxy resin, which can be used as a protective coating for your concrete flooring. It is very resistant to stains and it does a superior job of preventing chipping. It also protects against moisture seeping into the floor. Generally, it is used as an adhesive for securing things together.

If you are just tired of how your garage floor looks all the time then some form of garage floor protection is in order. We have already covered mats, tiles and epoxy resin. If you have neglected a concrete floor to the point of chips and cracking then before you do anything you must patch it up. If you plan to apply any type of coating, the flooring must be properly prepped. Failure to do this will result in your coating chipping or lifting from the concrete surface. All cracks and chipped areas are filled in with a mixture of epoxy and sand. Do not apply anything over top until the mixture has completely dried.

To test whether you have a moisture problem or not is rather simple. Place a rubber mat on the garage floor and make sure you tape down the edges. After a day or two has passed, lift the mat and see if any water collected between the mat and the floor. If there is water there then you have a moisture problem. You will need to apply a sealer that is designed to solve this type of issue. Once that step is completed, you will be able to continue with your garage floor protection. Whatever solution you come up with to looking after your concrete floor, make sure you have read all the instructions or consulted with professional at the hardware store. You just want to avoid any costly errors.

The Perfect Paint Job Requires Perfect Planning

You may have heard that the bulk of a paint job, is not in the painting itself, but in the preparation to paint. While this is the case, it's important to note that a solid preparation before painting will also increase your chances of a more successful and professional looking paint job. So, do not overlook the important steps involved in painting preparation. Well thought out preparation will make the job hassle-free and look as good as possible.

The task of painting should be broken down into simpler steps.

- Take down removable fixtures any wall hanging and nails/ screws holding them up.

- Remove phone switch and electrical covers

- To prevent dangerous accidents it's not a bad idea to shut off breakers in the room you're painting

- Remove the furniture from the room, or alternately push them all towards the center of the room and then cover them with a plastic covering.

- Clean walls with a sponge and a cleansing solution. Although TSP is often recommended, vinegar and water works fine on most walls. Rinse the sponge frequently and ensure that walls are completely dry before painting.

- For sharp and clean results apply good quality painter's tape on trim, windows, baseboards and door frames. Likewise use top quality brushes to help make the "cutting in" process as easy and clean as possible.

- Protect your floors by applying a pre-taped drop cloth, carpet masking tape or tarp against the baseboards.

- Make sure you're using the right kind of paint. Some walls will require oil based paints ( if you're painting walls that are already painted with an oil base). Also if the walls are stained, you might consider first applying a stain blocking primer.

- Follow the directions from the paint manufacturer in terms of application and drying times in between coats. Some special coats may require even more than two coats to bring forth the depth of color and luster you're looking for

- Patch or repair any holes or flaws in your walls with a spackling compound. Let dry for the appropriate amount of time and sand down to a smooth finish using sandpaper, or a damp cloth can work as well.

Be as thorough as you prep your paint site, and the painting will be fast, easy and look as if you hired a professional.

Epoxy Concrete Floor Coating

The first step in applying an epoxy concrete floor coating is to remove any part of the floor that is loose or could become loose in the near future. An example would be concrete, tar, paint, or any type of adhesive.

The next step in applying an epoxy concrete floor coating is to clean the floor with a chemical stripper. This step helps to remove grease, oil and dirt that are stuck on the concrete. A rotary scrubbing machine is used to help remove the oil and grease. Then a heavy-duty shop vacuum is used to suck up the mixture of dirt, grease, oil and stripper. It is important to get all the dirt removed from the cracks in the floor.

Before applying the epoxy concrete floor coating a second stripper is applied to help remove contaminants and to give the concrete a sandpaper like texture. A rotary scrubber is used to help remove any mineral stains still on the cement. As in the previous step, the mixture is then vacuumed up completely, making sure that everything is removed the cracks of the floor.

Your next step in the epoxy concrete floor coating project is to flood the floor with clean water and make sure to rinse all the debris away from the corners and around anything that is fixed to the floor. The scrub the floor again with the rotary scrubber until there is no more suds released from the floor. Then, like in the previous steps, the solution is vacuumed including the cracks in the floor. When this is done, you will repeat this step in exactly the same manner.

The first coat of the epoxy concrete floor coating is applied with rollers and a large paintbrush for any detailing work. Tape off any doorways and under garage doors. Sealers have a strong odor, so proper ventilation is a good idea. Make sure the weather is conducive to the coating hardening, below fifty-five degrees and it will not harden. Wait about five or six hours to apply the second coat.

If there are any cracks or pits in the floor, an epoxy product is used to fill in the problem areas. This should be done before the first coat or before the second coat. We have heard of both methods. Always read the directions before beginning a project like this, some epoxy concrete floor coatings may have different instructions.
