If you are the type of person who loves art, it is appropriate to put your talent into use. You can use your artistic side in creating pieces to design the basement. Like if you are into sewing, then you can create your own sofa sheets and pillows from old blankets or clothing. Or if you are into painting, then the basement is the perfect place for your art collections.

Basically painting your old furniture to give it a new look and you can even harmonize it to the room's color scheme. Or if you insist in purchasing a new decor, you can shop at yard sales or consignment store so that you can acquire the materials at a lesser price.

Paint is the cheapest of all the decorating materials and provides endless possibilities. To lighten up the dull area, paint the walls with bright color hues thus making basement more appealing and cheerful. Get rid of large structured walls to create an ambiance of a much spacious area thus too many interior walls create a cluttered environment.

Good lighting is one of the best ways to light up an old dark basement. Proper lighting improves space since it basically accommodates the thickness of the wall. A soft or a light colored incandescent bulb should be used instead of the basic bulbs.

In keeping the basement area clean, neat and warm, use floor coverings. Not only it protects you from feeling cold due to the basement concrete floors it is also helpful in redecorating your basement when you are on a budget. Be cautious that a basement floors should have double padding thus it is made up of concrete floor, standing on the floor for a period of time can cause your pain in your legs and back.

Plan well and determine how much you are willing to spend before remodeling your basement. The best basement ideas usually come from your own personal design. It is wise to do the job by yourself than hiring a professional team to do the work thus it saves you from high labor cost.

Painting Concrete Basement Walls - Add Colorful Spice to Your Basement

Painting concrete basement walls is a quick inexpensive way to change your lower atmosphere from dull and dingy to inviting and spicy. Even though the space is the same you'll be amazed t how much more lively the area becomes once it has been painted. One especially good way to create your own unique results is to create a theme and use multiple colors instead of just one basic color.

Think about what your basement is or will be used for and go from there. If your basement is used as a play area then why not paint checkerboards or sports related drawings. Or even a sports room for the guys is an extremely fun way for painting concrete basement walls. In this case, you can integrate all the favorite teams or just stick with a personal favorite as the theme to use.

However you plan, painting concrete basement walls will take some time and preparation. Since some basements draw moisture, this needs to be evaluated before painting. If your basement does have a moisture problem try to find the cause, and fix it to ensure a good and lasting paint job. Otherwise the results could be peeling, cracking paint, and potential problems with mold.

Painting Concrete Basement Walls

Before you actually begin to paint, there are a few steps to take. The walls must be clean and clear from any debris. Also, it is recommended that you perform a technique called acid etching before painting concrete basement walls. If you're painting concrete basement walls that already have been painted, you won't have to do the acid etching, unless there are bare or peeling spots in the old paint.

When preparing your solution for acid etching you must follow the directions precisely. The acid can be caustic, so make sure to wear protective gloves and other gear. In order for the paint to adhere, the powder must be completely removed. By following the etching directions correctly, your canvas should be the texture of number one or number two sandpaper. When the concrete is chemically neutral and dry, you can begin work on painting concrete basement walls and make sure there is proper ventilation for the paint fumes. Opening windows and doors near the area will help tremendously. Hooking up a fan if you have one is another great idea.

Natural Stone Surfaces Should Not Have Topical Finishes Applied - If They Do, Here is How to Fix It

Frequently we are asked to apply urethane or acrylic coatings to a natural stone. Anyone that knows anything about natural stone will tell you these products should never be applied to a stone surface. Stone is porous and proper sealers are resins dispersed in either solvents or water that penetrate the stone and are invisible on the stone surface. Topical finishes, like urethane or epoxy are best used on wood or vinyl, but have no role in natural stone. The reason is that these finishes penetrate the stone and cannot be removed by normal means, as you would vinyl with a simple water based stripper. Stone on the other hand is porous and will not respond to strippers, but will have to be ground out with expensive and labor intensive procedures.

We also find these types of topical finishes applied to tile and grout as a sealer or to just grout as a sealer. We would especially include the consumer product Mop N Glow, a finish suited for vinyl floor finishes. These products are neither appropriate for porcelain, ceramic or stone tiles. Due to the porosity of these materials, topical finishes penetrate deeply and are sometimes impossible to remove - short of grinding or stripping with heavy paint strippers.

Needless to say these are projects that are labor intensive as well as inconvenient to the owners. Heavy paint strippers and solvents are necessary to break down these sealers. They require careful handling due to chemical odors and difficulty of slurry recovery.

Remaining slurry have to be removed with great effort. These processes are time consuming and expensive. Stone floors on occasion have to be ground if acrylic penetrates deep into the product. For these reasons we strongly recommend against application of any acrylic floor finish (intended for use on vinyl flooring) to grouted product.

If you find yourself confronted with a topical sealer applied to your stone, you can try a simple test to remove the sealer. Many floor strippers are based on a glycol ether solvent. Find one of these and apply it to the stone in a small area and see if it loosens the topical sealer. If so you will need a wet vac, or some other manner to remove the accumulated slurry for disposal.

Give Your Kitchen a Paint Make-Over

Choosing the right kitchen color:-

Choosing colors for the kitchen is a rather arduous task since the end result needs to energize you and your family to work in the area and provide a calming abode after a long day at work. To begin with ask yourself a few questions. Why is your kitchen no longer appealing to you? Do you want to tone it down and make it a more relaxed space or do you want to give it a more dramatic look?

Keep in mind that cooler colors like light blue and green help tone down your kitchen while giving it a larger look. A semi-glossy finish reflects more light and your kitchen will look even larger. Warm colors such as gold and red act as appetite stimulants and best complement food. Since the kitchen is a space where family bonding takes place over meals, you need to be surrounded by colors that brighten the area and complements your day to day life.

Consider the overall theme of the house. Continue and complement the same types of colors that already exist in your home. Additionally, wall color should complement the flooring, cabinets and appliances.
Brighter colors tend to go well with stainless steel appliances.

If you desire a rustic and country style kitchen, have the cabinets painted in light brown with hints of red and yellow for the right effect. Warm, earthy color tones aesthetically aid such kitchens whereas pale, soft blues can compliment a traditional kitchen. Adding colors to the kitchen cabinets is a great way to enhance the overall look of your kitchen.

Another option for kitchen walls is to install trendy, designed tiles with deep colors above the kitchen counters. It's easy to wipe clean them and tiles add to the beauty of the kitchen.

Select paints with a gloss finish if you have children and pets since cleaning the walls will be a much easier task. Also focus on paints that have stain and grease resistance as well as wash ability. Several paint manufacturers offer kitchen paints that have been designed specifically for these spaces.

The kitchen is the most taken-for-granted part of the house but continues to be one of the most frequently used living spaces within the home. With the right makeover it would surely be more than just a place for cooking and eating. Painting is one of the easiest ways to make a difference in this room, which often has less wall space.

Refreshing your home with a new color scheme is a good investment not only for your home but also for your personal happiness. Discount Cork Flooring

Traditional flooring is not an option anymore for many homes because it attracts dust and requires high maintenance, among other disadvantages. Cork flooring is the best alternative because it is easy to care for, simple yet impressive in appearance, and gives interiors a real lift. Moreover, the installation of cork flooring is so uncomplicated, with no messy or smelly, polluting glues.

The flooring even comes in "do-it-yourself" packages and can be installed right on top of the existing flooring. Whether one wants an outstanding room or just a low-cost flooring alternative that is easy to maintain, cork is the best choice. Most top-quality flooring such as cork is available at wholesale prices. That is as much of a discount one can expect in many instances.

Cork flooring has been used in commercial spaces for years. One commonly cited example is the Toronto Stock Exchange building. The cork flooring did not negatively impact the joints of traders who were up and about the livelong day. It also made for a more serene indoor atmosphere as opposed to most other traditional flooring solutions. During the 1950s, cork floors were installed in public spaces such as restaurants and gyms because people spent a lot of time standing in these places.

As the time went by, manufacturers of cork flooring tried to bring down costs by replacing huge tiles with a veneer pattern on the face of a composition cork base and by reducing the thickness of the tiles from four to two millimeters. These experiments produced undesirable results such as breaking of tiles during installation. As a result, cork flooring sales declined and the industry earned a bad name.

Through the 1990s, however, the sale of cork tiles rose significantly. The mistakes of the past were corrected and manufacturers made sure the product was high in quality. Today installation can be done with little or no trouble, highlighting the benefits of the product in the process.

Concrete Sealers - Protect and Beautify After You Paint Or Stain

To extend the life and protect the features of any concrete surface a major key is the use of concrete sealers. Paints and Stains can be used to beautify the appearance of floors, patios, driveways and more, but the correct use of sealers plays a major role in protecting all your hard work and money that you have invested.

There are variety of concrete sealers, depending on the surface, but the key element they have in common is that they offer protection and physical enhancement. Sealers, when applied regularly and properly, offer protection from a whole slew of dirt, grease and chemicals, and from heavy traffic as well.

Many people, after having finished with their concrete related home improvement project, fail to apply the appropriate sealers. They may even maintain the surface impeccably clean. However, the damage done by the weather itself can really be pronounced in an non-sealed concrete surface. Cold winter weather in cities like Buffalo and Detroit can really wash out the colors of a surface that hasn't had a recent application of a good sealer. Likewise, the brutal summer heat in El Paso or Phoenix can fade a recently stained patio in no time. Concrete sealers, in short, allow the brilliance and beauty to shine through season after season.

Concrete surfaces in the interior of your home can be helped along by sealers as well. A nice epoxy sealer used on a concrete countertop, for example, will allow frequent cleanings without compromising the surface. A sealer of this type provides an extra layer or coat that will allow the beauty of the stain or paint to shine brilliantly through. So you can clean time and time again with chemical based cleaning products without fear of damage.

The durable nature of sealers is evidenced by the fact that some of them are used to protect highly traveled roadways, highways and city streets.  These are combined with metal alloys and are obviously not recommended, nor necessary, for home use. Their mention is simply used as a device to indicate just how important and effective concrete sealers can be.

For home use, especially on exterior surfaces, a clear concrete sealer is more than adequate. A nice smooth coat will protect floors, patios and driveways alike. An added benefit is that the resulting surface is far easier to clean and maintain than the non-sealed counterpart.

Any type of surface can benefit from sealers. Most of the major brands make these protective easy-to-apply compounds for a variety of settings. Check out Behr, Quikrete, Zinsser and Valspar for starters.

Again, don't let your time and money invested in improving your home go to waste. Keep the beauty of all your concrete surfaces bright and attractive with concrete sealers.

How to Lay Lino Flooring

There are many good things to say about cheap lino flooring. But having bought the stuff, few things could be worse than a botched installation job. However, learning how to lay lino flooring is not rocket science and by doing things the right way, any householder should be able to get the floor in place and looking great without too much difficulty.

A key issue to deal with at the outset is the floor below. Obviously the room the lino will be installed in must be cleared of furniture and other obstructions, but the floor below may or may not have to go. Sometimes lino can be laid on top of it, but often an uneven or damaged surface simply has to be replaced and before the new lino is laid down, it should be checked that the sub-floor is in good shape too.

Critically, it is important that anything sticking up is removed. Whether this is dirt, lumpy bits of paint or nails, it has to go to ensure that the new floor will be a smooth and even surface.

Lino comes in tiles or rolls and for each type there is a slightly different method of installation. But in both cases, what needs to be established first is the area of the room and also where its centre lies. This can be done by measuring the length of each wall and marking a point halfway. Two lines drawn across the floor that link each mark will cross in the centre of the room and therefore identify the spot.

Those laying down tiles can work outwards from here, laying them down one-by one and sticking them as they go.

For a roll, things are slightly trickier as it is a larger, single piece of material. It is a smart move to cut the material to something slightly larger than the area of the floor, to create a little extra leeway. This can always be trimmed from the edges after it is laid down. The roll should be laid down gradually, with each area stuck down bit by bit as you progress across the floor. Once down, a roller should be used to iron out any lumps and bubbles.

By following these simple tips, the result should be a lovely lino floor that gives many years of good service.

Laminate Flooring Cleaning Tips

Laminate flooring may be made to look like other kinds of floors, but that doesn't mean it isn't unique in other ways. When it comes to cleaning laminate floors, for example, there are some definite do's and don'ts. True, when it comes to cleaning laminate isn't as demanding as, say, carpet or certain types of tile flooring. But it still needs thorough, periodic cleaning.

To begin with, the most important thing is to give your laminate floor a regular light sweeping. This prevents any dirt or grit from building up, detracting from your floor's appearance. It also reduces the dust that goes into the room's air.

If sweeping is not going to get the job done you can try damp mopping. Use water with a little vinegar in it and make sure to wring the mop out thoroughly before applying it to the floor. You don't want to use excessive water. In fact, any time you find standing water on your laminate floor, it should be soaked up immediately.

Sometimes a little extra elbow grease might be needed, in which case cleaning by hand with a cloth moistened with a cleaning solution should do the trick. Just make sure that the solution is one that the manufacturer of your laminate flooring has approved. Using the right cleaner will make the job easier and help remove sticky and stubborn substances. Once again, when the job is done, soak up any excess water.

Water and humidity are laminate flooring's enemies. For this reason you shouldn't even consider steam cleaning. Steam cleaning is fine for certain other floor types - like carpet and tile - but is highly likely to damage a laminate floor. If you're faced with cleaning challenges that the above methods just can't handle, you might try applying a little acetone or alcohol to the problem area and using a soft-bristled brush to scrub it. This method can often be used to successfully remove asphalt, paint, crayon and even cigarette burns.

And never let your laminate floor fool you: Even though it can be made to look just like real wood, it isn't - which means no sanding, refinishing or waxing. Also, avoid using cleaning products of an abrasive nature. And keep those harsh scouring pads and that steel wool away too. These will only cause scratching, and over time, more serious wear.

Basement Flooring

Basement flooring is an important component of a finished basement. When deciding upon the appropriate basement flooring for your basement remodeling project, it is extremely important that you first determine whether or not you have a moisture barrier underneath the basement floor. If you do not have a moisture barrier underneath the concrete slab then you will have high moisture levels that will wick through the concrete floor to the basement flooring.

To check if you have a moisture barrier underneath your basement's floor, cut open a few plastic trash bags and lay them in a few different places on the basement floor. Spread them out on the basement floor and tape them down. After a couple of days remove the plastic trash bags from the basement floor and observe if they are wet on the bottom side. If they are, chances are there is no moisture barrier underneath the basement concrete slab. If this is the case, your basement flooring choices are more limited.

It is possible, however, to increase your basement flooring choices by applying a basement waterproofing sealer to the basement floor and to the walls. You can also have a French drain installed around the basement foundation; however this is an expensive endeavor as it will require excavation, gravel and PVC pipes to be installed.

If it is determined that you do have a moisture barrier underneath the basement concrete slab then there are a number of flooring choices to choose from.

Basement Flooring - Carpeting

Though not the ideal basement flooring, carpeting is frequently used in basement remodeling projects. Berber carpeting seems to be quite popular today due to its durability and comfort. Carpeting can be installed even in cases where it has been determined that a moisture barrier was not installed below the concrete slab. A cellulose underlayment can be installed on the concrete floor, prior to installing the carpet padding and carpet to provide a moisture barrier.

Carpeting is great for absorbing sounds that are typically found in a basement, such as furnaces turning on and off, and water running down drain pipes.

Basement Flooring - Free Floating Engineered Flooring

Engineered flooring is ideal for basements, as it floats on top of a foam underlayment that is first placed on the basement floor. The foam underlayment helps to mitigate unevenness in the basement floor and also helps to reduce sound. The engineered flooring floats on this underlayment and can effectively breathe with changes in the basement's moisture levels.

Engineered flooring is also ideal for basement flooring due to its construction. It is constructed of several layers of wood materials, which helps to stabilize the flooring from warping or twisting. The top layer is usually an attractive wood veneer finish that really gives the look of a solid hardwood floor, but without the concerns of damage due to high moisture levels.

Basement Flooring - Laminate Flooring

Like engineered flooring, laminate floats on an underlayment. Laminate floors have a wood based core and a photographic resin layer based surface that resembles a hardwood floor or vinyl floor look. Laminate floorings need to be installed in dry basements with low moisture levels, as it is possible for laminate floors to delaminate if they come in contact with water.

Laminate and engineered flooring are both designed to be installed by the do it yourself homeowner.

Basement Flooring - Ceramic Tile Floors

Ceramic tile floors are also another excellent choice for basement flooring, however they can be cold on the feet. It is also important that there are no moisture issues with the basement as this could negatively impact the life of the ceramic tile. In addition, it is important that the basement floor is level prior to installing the ceramic floor tile. A leveling grout or mortar may need to be applied on the basement floor before installing the ceramic floor tiles. Also, it is imperative that any basement floor cracks be filled in and sealed as ceramic floor tile has a tendency to crack along basement floor cracks otherwise.

Painting Basement Floors

An inexpensive alternative is to apply a couple of coats of paint to the floor. This is typically acceptable in a low-end basement remodeling project, and it may be the only sensible thing to do if there are concerns of high moisture levels or if there is the threat of the occasional flood.

You can fancy it up a little bit by adding two color tones and or creating interesting patterns.

Basement Flooring - Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring should not be considered as a basement flooring material. It is very susceptible to high moisture levels and can not come in contact with water. If it does, the wood will warp and quickly become ruined.

Marble Floor Tiles - For When You Are Tired of Hardwood Flooring

Sometimes it is a good idea to replace the flooring that you currently have. Over the years your floor goes through quite an ordeal. This can leave it looking dull, chipped and damaged and it can be hard to repair. So replacing it is often the best idea and it doesn't have to be as expensive as you think either.

Why Marble Floor Tiles Are Worth Considering

If you are thinking of replacing your flooring then marble floor tiles could be an option worth considering. They are stylish, easy to clean and they come in a variety of designs. For example, the tiles can either be rough or smooth and they often have a pattern on them which can include hand painted designs. Obviously the more complex the pattern, the more expensive the tiles will be, and the pattern which you choose will depend upon the room that you are placing them in.

For example, if you are placing the marble floor tiles in the kitchen you will want a pattern such as leaves or perhaps plain tiles are more your style. In the living room a nice swirl pattern on the tiles could go well. Take you time to know what effect you are after and look around at the options available to you before you make a decision.

You can purchase marble floor tiles from a number of different locations including local hardware department stores and on the internet. You should ideally measure the area where the tiles are going as they are usually sold in square feet and if you do not know what area you need to cover, you will not be able to purchase any.

If you do take a guess and you just purchase a rough number you could really end up regretting it. This is because if you purchase too little tiles and you have to go back to the store, they could very well have sold out of the tiles you purchased. That would mean that you have gaps where the tiling should be and it will mean all your hard work with the other tiles was for nothing. If anything always try and order too many, especially if they are patterned as then at least you have some spare in case the other ones chip or break somehow.

Overall marble floor tiles can be a good alternative to hardwood flooring but you really do need to ensure that you measure the room before purchasing any. They are easy to clean and they can be inexpensive too so they are certainly worth considering when you next look out for new flooring ideas.

How To Remove Black Mold From Concrete And Keep Your Basement Mold-Free

Lots of homeowners find out they have an uninvited guest shacking up in their basement. Ever seen little white fuzzy stuff on your concrete basement floor?

Mold on concrete can take many forms. Concrete is a porous substance, and your basement floor gets a lot of moisture from the ground underneath it.

Usually, concrete foundations have a moisture barrier. But, in some cases the moisture barrier is old or damaged, or it may not have been properly installed.

In arid places like Southern California, Arizona and high altitudes, you may not have a moisture barrier built into your home. You usually don't need it, but if you have a heavy rain or a spell of humid weather, you're likely to get that nasty mold growing on your concrete floors.

If you have mold growing on basement tiles or under basement carpeting, the cause may be the concrete underneath. No matter what your mold problem, you have to remove it from your concrete.

A Little Bleach And Elbow Grease

If you've got a little mold growing on your concrete surfaces, it's easy enough to clean up. For little bits of mold here on there, use a solution of water and bleach. 4 parts water to 1 part bleach is usually the recommended formula. You can also find cleaning products designed specifically for mold removal.

Scrub at the moldy spots with your bleach and water until it's gone. Be careful - that bleach is dangerous stuff. Make sure you have some good rubber gloves and be careful that the bleach doesn't come into contact with anything else.

Seal It Up

If you have more serious mold problems and a good scrubbing won't get rid of it, you might try sealing the cracks. Chances are, the appearance of mold on your concrete surfaces is a symptom of a bigger structural problem in your home. There may be cracks in the concrete or walls that allow moisture to come into the house.

Go to the hardware store and look for a waterproofing compound made for this specific purpose. If you're totally unsure, talk to the clerk and explain your problem. What you want is something especially designed to seal up cracks in your concrete and walls. The compound will come with detailed instructions on how to use it.

Call The Contractor

If you have water wicking up from under your foundation into the concrete, you've got a much bigger problem. You may need to call a professional.

What you'll need to do is take off all the flooring so the original concrete is exposed. This is something you can probably do yourself, but you should make sure to keep yourself safe. Any time you're dealing with mold, make sure you have good gloves and a mask, and make sure that the mold doesn't get into any other parts of the house. Even if you're working in the basement, make sure you have some ventilation going.

Now, you'll need to have a new top layer of concrete poured. It has to be at least one inch thick. Make sure that the new cement is mixed with a waterproofing compound that will keep down its moisture level.

This is a big job and most of us would have to call a contractor. Check your local yellow pages.

What You Should Know Before Applying a Garage Floor Coating

If you are planning on resurfacing your garage floor with an epoxy or polyaspartic coating there are a few things to know to prevent problems later.

Moisture In Concrete

Concrete is mixed with water which is an obvious statement, but what happens during the cure process? Water combined with ash, sand, aggregate and water creates a chemical reaction that turns the mix into a hard substance. The cure cycle called hydration is part of the chemical process. Excess moisture will work it's way to the surface leaving a trail behind it. As the moisture goes to the surface the concrete hardens and the trail left behind the water is an air hole or vein. Moisture pressure will push upwards traveling to the surface through these pores.

There are two types of pressure that can cause a coating to have problems. There is capillary and hydrostatic pressure. Hydrostatic pressure happens when concrete is below grade. Moisture below grade creates tremendous pressure that pushes upwards through the tiny air holes in concrete. As it pushes upwards it pushes salts to the surface as well. Capillary pressure has a similar result with less pressure. Either way the moisture and salts can cause coatings to chip and delaminate.

Checking For Moisture In Your Slab

The easiest way is to tape plastic down to the floor in a few areas. You can also put down heavy rubber mats on the floor. If after 24-48 hours you have condensation underneath you have a moisture issue. It is possible to get different reading at various times of the year. In colder climates you will have minimal moisture in winter or early spring that can increase when the ground thaws. If your concrete is above grade with a basement below you will likely have little if any moisture.

Choosing a Coating

There are epoxies and polyaspartics or polyureas products for coating a garage floor. Whatever you choose surface prep is the most important first step. Cracks should be filled with a polyurea filler for best results. Polyureas can be thin enough to completely fill a crack to the bottom. Your concrete is likely about 4 inches thick. A crack will go all the way through. Filling the crack to the bottom with a filler that will cure below grade, absorb into the walls of the crack and flex will keep moisture vapor from traveling to the surface. There are also some heavy duty epoxies used for waterproofing that are an excellent alternative.

The next step is to etch, shotblast or grind the surface to either provide increased surface area or open the pores of the concrete. Etching with a gel acid is a simple and effective way to profile the concrete with results similar to shotblasting. Shotblasting is the process of shooting thousands of tiny ball bearings at the surface. Either process will abrade the surface feeling like 100 grit sandpaper. This is the process before applying an epoxy coating.

Floor grinding is another surface prep method which opens the air holes and veins of the concrete while also removing the highs and lows of the floor. This is the correct process if using a polyurea or polyaspartic coating. These two materials are different than epoxies. Polyureas absorb into the airholes and veins in concrete and actually cap off the surface preventing moisture damage. Epoxies do not have the capability to absorb into concrete. Instead they stick to the surface. The process of etching or shotblasting substantially increases the surface area for epoxy to stick to.

If you have low traffic and no moisture you may be able to get away with an epoxy paint. In a garage a high performance epoxy or polyurea is the best choice for holding up to hot tires caused by road friction and chemicals that may drop to the floor. If moisture is an issue a properly prepared floor with a polyurea coating is your best choice.

Another difference to consider between an epoxy and polyureas is what happens with micro scratches that are inevitable. Epoxies get a frayed edge from scratches which trap dirt and surface moisture creating a bacteria build. Surface scratches on a polyurea are straight making it easy to clean and avoid bacteria build.

Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation

Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation in Marseille. Visit to the Unite d'Habitation in Marseille built 1947-1952, visited July 2008. The building is conceived as a city in the sky, a 12 storey multi-use high-rise with 337 flats, and a number of shops, offices, hotel, school, club, and a roof garden that reclaims the land footprint. It is surrounded by parkland. This one is also called 'Cité Radieuse' and there are a number of repeat Unité buildings in other cities, such as Berlin, Firminy, Nantes. www.galinsky.com The block is oriented North-South. At the time, there was almost no precedent for highrise housing, all of which have been postwar. That makes this is a highly inventive project. This is the East elevation, facing Boulevard Michelet. It includes the core of stairs and lifts. The vertically louvred floor is the two stories of shops and offices. On the same level is the hotel. For most of the building, the flats are 2-storey, double ended with an east and west window. At the south end, the flats change to single aspect, with sun breaking details to reduce solar gain. It's a pity the side wall at the south end has no windows (architectural purism more important than environmental benefit of daylight) The building is on piloti (giant columns), one of Corb's guiding principles of architecture - freeing the land. In the late 40s there was a shortage of steel, so concrete (Beton brut) was used, with unskilled labour. This made the construction time very long, and now ...

Burj Dubai video from 155th floor

quick video i took whilst on the 155th floor of the burj dubai whilst still in construction, which is equivalent to being roughly around 590m up. It was unfortunate that the day i went up was quite hazy, and i didn't have much time to record either, so this is all I could come up with. At the time of the video, the Burj Dubai had reached the 157th floor, which is where it will stay for a while as from there the actual frame of the building becomes all steel and not concrete (due to the last 200m or so of the building not actually going to be inhabitable, it's merely there to make the building taller). Enjoy.

Best Practice Installation of Indoor Outdoor Carpet Runners

Indoor outdoor carpet is durable carpet that is designed to withstand weather, moisture, and pool chemicals. This type of carpet is less expensive than the regular carpet. It is often used in porches, sunrooms. Play rooms, changing and mud room. In addition to Decks patios walks and pools.

The best kind of indoor out door carpet to choose is one that is made with Olefin. Carpet made with this material is usually treated so it will be stain resistant and moisture resistant. Some are even treated to protect against fading in the sun and harsh pool chemicals. This special treatment prolongs life of the carpet. Every few years the chemicals need to be reapply because over time the resistance wears down.

The higher grades of indoor outdoor carpet tend to be thicker and usually have a marine backing. The backing is important if the area you plan to use it will be exposed to high levels of moisture. This prevents mold and mildew problems.

Indoor outdoor carpet comes in a variety of colors styles and textures. The most popular seem to be the earth tone; green brown grey and black.

Outdoor plush carpets are nice for areas that are completely covered. It has a different look and feel from other types of outdoor carpets. Like the other carpet you should use higher grade for higher activities.

Another type of indoor outdoor carpet is astro turf. It is the green stuff you see on golf courses. There are three type is Polypropylene, polyethylene, and nylon. The first polyethylene is a soft material often used for play areas. Polypropylene is least expensive. It is used in golf course. Nylon works well in playgrounds and putting greens.

Outdoor carpet runners are small pieces of indoor outdoor carpet placed in entrance ways. This carpet needs to be at least 5/16" thick. It should have a backing that keeps it in place and prevents people from slipping. It like the other carpet should be treated to prevent stains and moisture builds up.

Before purchasing compare density and backing. The thicker the carpet the longer it will last and it will feel better to walk across. Make sure it has a moisture barrier if there is any chance that it will get wet. You would want to choose a higher quality thicker carpet if you plan to use it in areas with a lot of activities.

Retro Kitchen Decorating Tips

A retro kitchen is one of the most popular decorating ideas when it comes to kitchens these days. It implements the use of newer and vintage items. This means whether you're into the nostalgic 1930s or the cool 1960s, you can easily integrate retro styles into your kitchen.

The first step to achieving this style is to select a color palette for your kitchen. The best would be to make use of mod colors like oranges, browns and blues. These colors are regarded as the "true retro colors". Then, get paint cards that can match your color scheme. Just carry these cards when you go shopping for accessories so you won't fall off the color matches.

Before buying kitchen decor and accessories, consider your kitchen windows and walls. Visualize how they may look with retro colors. You can also try window treatments to achieve that retro kitchen theme. What can be more suitable to these windows? Of course, vintage curtains!

Another area to consider is lighting. This is where overhead and task lighting fixtures will become handy. Implement lighting that looks vintage with that funky appeal. Choose drop lights that come in various colors and styles. These days, there are numerous lighting fixtures you can get for this theme, but make sure you choose them for practical reasons and not only for visual appeal.

For retro kitchen decor, furniture and accessories, there are lots of stuff you can easily find to compliment this theme. You can try using pottery and dish towels. You can also have retro kitchen chairs as well as tables. Use the fun retro style by implementing chrome furniture or even modern styles coming from the 1960s. Make sure you choose your furniture and accessories wisely so you don't end up wasting money by buying new pieces all over again.

Go for vintage pieces. This is perhaps the best way to achieve that retro kitchen look. You don't need to shell out lots of money for these pieces. You can find good ones in garage sales, thrift shops and even on your attic. You can go as far as going to your relatives as well as friends and ask them if they have unused stuff you can look at. Once you find something suitable for your kitchen, ask them if you can buy it. Most relatives and friends will just give these things away.

You can also hang artwork and atomic clocks throughout the room. You can also add some shelves where you can place cool vintage collectibles such as salt and pepper shakers. About flooring, you can just put retro style rugs or shags in orange, brown, avocado or aqua colors.

It is in the final decorative touches that showcase how you've successfully achieved the retro kitchen theme. It is in this part where you can come up with unique ways to enhance the look of your kitchen. Whether it's a mod donut phone from the 1970s or Dansk wooden accents, it's up to you and up to how creative you can become. However, never overdo your retro kitchen decor and accessories. Try to put a limit on the things you put and make way for the more important stuff inside the kitchen like cooking tools and the fridge among others.

If you feel that you still haven't fully achieved that retro kitchen theme, there are many magazines, books and even online tips that can help you. Browsing and looking for retro room designs and replicating them on your kitchen can do wonders.

Concrete Acid Stain is Not a Coloring Agent Or Paint

Concrete is a composite material used commonly in building construction. It consists of a combination of an aggregate and a cement binder. The most common type of cement comprises Portland cement, mineral aggregates and water. Concrete is the most widely used man-made material on earth.

Stained Concrete

Acid stain is not a coloring agent or paint. It is basically, a coloring procedure that involves certain chemical reactions on cementitious material. Water, acid and inorganic salts react with the minerals present in the concrete to form a solution that imparts it the color. Acid stains are made from hydrochloric acid, metallic ions and wetting agents. Acid stain provides a mottled, marble like look. It can create various beautiful colors on the concrete such as earthy tones of red, green and reddish brown. Acid staining produces better effects on old concrete. There are different kinds of acid stains available such as ChemTone. This stain does not contain hydrochloric acid and is safer for transporting and handling. Acid staining is permanent, it does not fade or chip.

Where and How to Do It?

Acid staining of concrete can be done in walks, entrances, patios, driveways, living rooms and bathrooms. A smooth concrete surface is better for acid staining. Application of acid stain requires few tools such as paintbrushes, sprayers and a saw with a diamond blade for scoring the surface. One gallon of stain with one gallon of water can color approximately 400 square feet. A new concrete slab needs time for curing (at least three weeks after pouring the mixture). It also has to be rinsed and scrubbed. Old concrete needs to be thoroughly cleaned as any dust, dirt or grease will prevent the acid stain from penetrating properly. It is recommended to test the acid stain on a small area first. Acid stains are transparent and any scratches or cuts on the concrete add to the charm. It is recommended to apply the stain with non-metallic equipments. When the floor is dry, sealing is advised to enhance the color and shield the concrete. The sealer can be applied with a phenolic core roller or sprayers.

Pumping Or Conveying

The use of concrete is a crucial part including structure and changing designs. The formula of installing it, either by pumping or carrying, is a significant side of the design construction. When one pumps it, the point is that there's a faster location of the concrete than applied by a transporter. This is good if you've a big design such a construction base that asks more of it for construction. It also reduces the number of time asked to decant it so that same will be available at low prices. Because of the potential speedy grade of its location, same will reduce or perhaps beat concrete cold joints and decant lines; because if there are these cold joints, they will take additional time to end the job. When applying a pumps, there's a lot of selections on how to localize it. And it creates no cold joints, because if there are cold joints; materials are in a loss.

Pushed concrete is much lighter to take care of; as it's decanted to the particular assigned patch, contrary to transporters which may bead large burdens of it; that have to be manually applied. There are also really small balks that may block a pumping line. Also, the pipelines give the skill to journey by compacted places, below or higher up bulwarks, and cut down besotted niches which admits the pushed existent to be decanted on hard to accomplish part, and by applying concrete puma that earn no concrete cold joints and fully avoid of concrete cold joints. Conveying affects a little more for a detail design. For example, unequal pumping, when concrete is sent, is to be aimed as speedily as possible. Later the concrete blend is blended jointly with water. Conveyors are principally designed to carry and base such materials like stone and guts.

Pumping concrete gives more advantages over a conveyor. When choosing which formula is better for your design, you've to check what character of design you'll be acting as this is a central factor checking the character of concrete locating formula that will be finally applied.

Interior Design Ideas For Your Home

Interior designing has always been fun, hasn't it? The fact is, you do not have to cough up extra cash to 'expert designers' to design YOUR home. You can Do It Yourself! Just be sincere to your spouse and kids, sit down, think through and decide. It's actually that simple - I am giving you the tips that I myself have used and earned accolades from neighbours. I am sure, you will too!

As a general advice, keep your living room the brightest and your bed room the darkest. Keep other rooms in between. Remember, Kitchens may emit some smoke if you are not using a chimney. So, try to keep it a darker color at least on the walls if you do not want to clean them every other day! Also remember to match the color of your wall/furniture and even the appliances to the color of the tiles on the floor.

There are people who want neutral colors like Beige, Black, White, Grey etc. There are people who want vibrant colors on the walls and everywhere else. Consult with your partner to decide on which color you want painted for the walls, furniture and so forth. You may try painting all the rooms with just one color. This would be a great idea, only that some people who are creative, may not like it. The other extreme is to paint each wall in a room with different colors or at least alternate or opposite walls with different colors. There are people in between, who would like to paint each room with one color.

Create cup boards and draws to store your groceries. In fact, you will need ample space for this and this should be your foremost consideration in designing your kitchen. Design the height, placement and width of the draws based on how frequently you will reach out to the items; most frequently reached out should be nearest and the most easily accessible to you. Next up is moving space. Of course, you need space to move about, don't you? Keep ample straight line space so that you don't bump over your partner when both of you rush to your offices!

You don't want to forget your appliances, if you are a no-gadget-no-life kind of a person. You have the microwave ovens, multi-burner gas stoves, electronic chimneys, mixers, juicers, coffee makers, toasters and so forth. Design spaces compactly for these. You could consider buying custom packages from the market if you have a deep pocket!

Bed room has to be gloomy and yet full of life! Challenging, huh! It is really all about designing your bed room the first time. Choose appropriate colors on the walls and your bed and your sheets as well. Do not forget to light your bedroom appropriately. People often make the mistake of lighting the bed room as if to host the G7 summit. What? Well...

If you are having school-going kids or teenagers, ask them their thoughts. Get as creative as you can when you decorate your children's rooms. Use cartoons on the wall, but only wall papers so that they can redesign it after they grow up. Use vibrant colors. If you have 2 or more kids, consider buying a stepped cot. Most importantly, ask them. If they do not like your idea, they may resist using that room!

Disclaimer: This is not intended to replace professional advice and should at best serve as general information or tips. You are urged to seek professional advice from practitioners in the field to help you further.

Concrete Garage Floor Paint

Not many homeowners pay much attention to the state of their garage floor. However, with the influx of do it yourself and home makeover television shows this is changing. Concrete garage floor paint sales are increasing much more rapidly in the last several years. Some people have used an oil-based paint on their floor; however, they eventually find that it peels off relatively easily. This frustrates people because of all the work they did to get the floor painted in the first place. The problem is that the wrong paint is used or the floor was not cleaned properly before painting.

Before any concrete garage floor paint is applied, the floor must be thoroughly cleaned. Go to your local hardware store and find out what they have in stock that will remove all the dirt, oil and grease from your garage floor. Make sure you follow the directions properly on the can. In addition, the proper protective clothing and eye protection needs to be worn. A facemask may be necessary as well.

Another tool to consider using before applying any concrete garage floor paint is a pressure washer. If you do not have one then consider renting one that has at least twelve hundred to two thousand psi. Your hardware store should provide you with a good grease-removing cleaner to use with the pressure washer. Another reason that your coating may not stick is that there is too much moisture in the floor. Moisture from the ground can work up into the floor and loosen the paint.

If your garage floor has heavy water leakage or is damp and slimy throughout the summer then do not apply concrete garage floor paint. Your best option is to keep it as clean as possible. There are new products available that contain epoxy coatings that protect your garage floor from the heat from your tires, from moisture vapor and chemical and oil spills. The standard procedures for the cleaning the floor before the application remain the same, which means the cleaning aspect is still very important to the coating adhering properly. You can find these products at your local hardware store or big box do it yourself center.

Basement Flooring Ideas to Finish Your Project

Basement flooring ideas give homeowners many different potential routes that they can take for basement renovations, but for some these extra choices simply complicate matters. When some people first take on a new project such as finishing a basement, they know right away what the end product is going to be.

Other people take more of a step by step approach, waiting to see the kinds of costs they will be facing, how things are turning out and ultimately what the best choice will be. However you fit into the equation, there are many different basement flooring ideas that you can put to use depending on what you're trying to achieve. Try to not to be overwhelmed and instead focus on finding something that really works for you in as many ways as possible.

A lot of homeowners like the appeal of a hardwood floor in their basement. This is attractive, however it won't fit all of your intended usages depending on what you had in mind. The other problem is that it can be susceptible to moisture damage if you're not careful. It's a beautiful option, but may not be best for everyone. Hardwood can be a great option for a potential home office or study, some place where you will be often enough to want something very attractive but not constantly enough or through the night where the lack of insulation can make things cold.

Another option is for tile flooring in your basement. There are all kinds of tile options, ranging from cheap to very expensive. Tile will be easy to maintain, but has a limited range of uses, particularly in a basement because it won't fit the needs of a bedroom or a gym, for example. It also won't add any insulation value to the basement, so you can expect to be dealing with a constantly cold floor. Good places to put down tile flooring in your basement will be additional bathrooms, or even a refinished laundry room.

Carpeting is the most versatile and therefore the most common. It can be used for any intended purpose, and it will usually be able to stand up to the test of time. It will also help add some warmth to your basement, as well as a true homey feel. However if you wanted a nice bar or lounge setting for example, it might not fit that role perfectly.

In addition to all of these basement flooring ideas you'll also have a wide range of options. These include layers of composite materials, various rubbers and connectible flooring units and more. These are generally amongst the cheap options that you have, and therefore they are growing in popularity, particularly as they become more functional and more attractive.

Don't settle for any basement flooring ideas that don't fit your overall picture for what you want completed. There's a way to make everything work, whether it's tweaking your budget in some way, coming up with a compromise of some kind or reevaluating your ultimate vision for the end product.

How to create plans Kitchen

Sometimes they are free, but the service is often free. Sometimes they come and measure your kitchen, but sometimes you have to measure them so that they can make your kitchen plans. If they are good, they should ask what you use for your kitchen, for example, entertaining, eating, only the preparation of simple meals, dinner parties etc, and which devices you want to include in the plans. You should then be able to tailor plans to build kitchen to your needs and budget. Of course, if theySales of the kitchen then their plans may not be the cheapest version possible, so make sure you know that and prepared to negotiate and special offers.

If you are planning to buy the installation of the kitchen itself, either from scratch or from cabinets, you must still prepare food that to make everything fit. There are two ways to do this. The Fundamentals of Interior Design

The luxury lifestyle does not require a mansion. You do not until you make a large house on the beach, waiting to live in a beautiful house. Think of the luxury lifestyle is about quality things and people. Small cozy houses, which are made one for a luxurious small amount of money through clever interior design. Think of the many self-made not to spend money if they do not have. Living a luxury lifestyle is not about throwing money away to look cool, it's simple, your concernsLiving. If you can do that economically, the better.

In this article I'll introduce the basics of interior design, which I studied when I renovate houses. The key to a successful renovation is to make cosmetic improvements, not structural improvements to a house. The construction of new facilities, adding another level to a structure or moving walls around very expensive and very moving walls may weaken the structure. You want a house WOW factor to improveImpression. Here are some tips ...

Painting - A new paint job will do more to improve somewhat the look of your home as. It is a relatively simple task, so you can save a fortune by doing it yourself. Give the surfaces to be painted a good clean with sugar soap and scrape the loose stuff. Bog is no cracks or depressions to smooth surface, then paint. Whether you are an undercoat or not depends on what you use to paint. GetAdvice from an interiors shop. The underlying principle for all renovations including painting is KISS Keep It Simple Stupid. Keep using your color schemes simple, neutral colors, they reflect light better making rooms seem bigger and they look cleaner. Be consistent throughout.

Kitchens - Do not go crazy, they can eat heaps of money if you do not pay attention. If you divided your kitchen then you have no other choice than to get a new one. If you can avoid, however, do not get a newonly cosmetically retouched, you have. New table tops, tiled splash back, door handles, cabinet handles tap handles, a paint job and floor will make a huge difference and will not cost the world.

Bathrooms - Another money pit. Light and bright is the secret here. Just like the kitchen if it breaks, you have no choice but the big money spent and replace things. If you do away with him indeed, change the table tops, door handles, cabinet handles,Tap handles and floor tiles (wall tiles can be a huge job does not change, expensive, if possible) Get a new look, a new toilet seat, toilet paper holder and towel rail. This will transform the space and will not cost much.

Flooring - makes a huge difference. New carpet, tiles or linoleum will transform a room. Also, remember if you have a quality wood floor is good enough, pulls the carpet and polishing the floorboards. It looks fantastic and iscost.

Doors - to change the door handles in the house for a classier style and make sure you remain consistent throughout.

to transform Window Treatments - also involves a space. Make sure they fit with the rest of the room.

Landscaping - Can you cost a fortune. All you really need to do (unless your garden is a contribution from) rip out all the plants, except for the larger established ones. Install some edges, lay some turf again if necessary (if you're dead spots where grass havewill not grow, you can pave that area which is expensive or extend plant the garden in this area and plant shade resistant plants), the garden with colorful plants and add mulch to your garden beds. Plant tall plants at the back of the perimeter gardens or the middle of the Central Gardens and have smaller plants in front. Try to get a few different shades of green in the leaves of various plants. Blossoming Try a variety of plant flowers, so you have something that most times of the year. Flowers cangive your garden a pleasant smell so good and attract birds. River stones or concrete surfaces are also an inexpensive alternative to paths.

Painting of the road - makes a big difference to the WOW factor. Probably best to a professional to do it but get it own scaffolding, they could risk their necks.

Decking and verandahs - Cheaper than adding rooms to your house, but adds square footage to your living room. If you live above the snow line this may not appeal, but forwarmer climates outdoor living spaces are wonderful for entertaining. Tiles on concrete porches.

Fences - If you have an existing fence, give it a new paint job. If you have a front fence in a white picket fence set not. Add an attractive mailbox.

Get a new door - These really add or detract from the appearance of your home.

The bottom line is, you do not have to change where you live necessarily, as it looks. Spend your money on luxury household goods not toexpensive structural changes. Read now to learn about the layout of your home, and how to decorate it to raise your standard of living and add to your luxury lifestyle.

1st The Fundamentals of Interior Design

There are 3 basic guidelines for successful interior design.

A successful room is functional.

A successful room expresses a mood.

A successful room has a feeling of harmony.

Function - Ask yourself what are the intended function of the space? A roomshould be used to work there. decorate, no matter how nice a room you if your system can not fulfill all the functions you need to complete the space, then the room has failed. If one is not comfortable dining room, eat, then it is not. If a bedroom is not to sleep comfortably, then it is not. Does your living room have appropriate lighting for reading, if any of the functions of the space? Are there tables in the vicinity of the seating to put your drink? You get theIdea.

Mood - What is the atmosphere you bring to this space to express? Are you looking for a sleek, modern, sophisticated look or a rustic, casual, warm mood etc? Every aspect of the room you make must be kept the same mood. Mood refers to the overall look or feel you want to bring the space to express. The colors, furniture, window treatments, floor treatments and lighting styles etc. must all be consistent with this look and feel.

Harmony - all the separate elements in a room mustwork together in harmony. All items should be appropriate and should not feel out of place. Each element should be in a harmonious atmosphere, scale, quality and color. We have already discussed mood. The scale must also be harmonious, this means all elements of the same scale as each other and the same size should the space itself. No high chairs in small rooms or small chairs in large rooms. No high chairs with small chairs, etc. The quality must also harmonious. If youexpensive high quality furniture then do not use them with cheap looking curtains etc. and finally, the color must be harmonious. The colors in your furniture, etc. do not have the color in your carpet clash

In every room you design yourself, you must follow these 3 guidelines.

Now we want to discuss the 4 steps for the design of a room.

Sketching a room.

Draw a floor plan.

Furniture layout.

Lighting plan.

Sketching a room - onthis stage you need only a rough sketch of your room and write down make accurate measurements for the length of the room, the width of the room and the ceiling height. Height of the bars (the planks on the floor between the walls and the ceiling and the boards around doors and windows, etc.), and the dimensions of your doors and windows must be noted and measured. Measure how far the windows and doors are from the corners of the room and the ceiling and floor. Are there anyFeatures in the room (air conditioning units, chimneys, etc.)? Measure these and write it down. Note where the sockets and switches are. Notice where no lamps.

Run a checklist climate. Write what made everything out and in what condition it is in. Everything except the furniture I mean. Is there something to be repaired? Write down what are the window types. Are they aluminum sliding windows, casement etc made of wood? Well shootevery corner of the room as a reference.

Draw a floor plan - Buy some graph paper from a stationery supply shop. Re rough sketch show on the graph paper scale. A good benchmark for most of the rooms use is 1 / 4 inch = 1 foot. You need an accurate floor plan so you can plan a later furniture. Show on your floor plan, where the doors and windows are also to scale. Do not show your measurements on the floorplan it is too much clutter, keep all yourMeasurements on your sketch. Type in your floor plan, which way is North. This is important because it tells you where the sun rise and set in relation to your room windows. How is the sunlight your room? Will the setting sun to be blocked by heavy curtains? Are you the morning sun to your advantage, the room after a cool night warm?

Furniture layout - There are 4 questions you must ask yourself when you decide where you put your furniture.

What arethe equilibrium lines of the room?

Where are the traffic patterns in the room?

What is the focus in the room?

How can I change the axis of the room?

The balance lines are easy to determine. Draw 2 faint lines in your floor plan divides the room in half length and width as basis. This gap is your room into 4 quadrants. This is important because you have the same "weight" of the furniture in each quadrant in order for the area need to bebalanced.

Traffic patterns are also simple. Leave 36 inches clear before allowing each door to make room for the swing of the door. Also keep 12 inches clear in front of the windows for access. Traffic patterns tell you where to put any furniture, mark these on your floor plan.

Well, what about the center of the room? Is it a fireplace? Bay window? Blank wall will go where the home theater screen or an artwork? Do you plan to use your furniture layout of this offerto concentrate.

Make an axis for the room. They now want the ceiling to draw an imaginary line to the center of the wall from the ground up on your focus. Set this line across the ceiling and the wall opposite to the ground. The idea is, you want the focus balanced from floor to ceiling. If your focus is a fireplace mean by a picture or anything about them, to fill the space would be. You need to balance both sides of the room. One ought toPut something on the other wall of the same visual "weight" along the axis line. It's all about balance.

You are now ready to plan where your furniture will start to go into the room. You need to place the furniture in the room, so it takes advantage of the focus and so it serves the function of the space. Arrange your furniture so that all 4 quadrants have equal visual "weight". This does not mean, you must have a mirror image of the furniture in the quadrants, but it just means you do not, want every piece of furniture in one quadrant or one half. on your floor plan of the room should look balanced visually. Draw representative of your furniture on your floor plan to scale. Try out different ideas. You decide which are most attractive.

Lighting Plan - Do not try to light the room. Bright objects in the room. First, you must allow people to carry out your lights for the specific tasks of the room. For example, with lamps for reading, playing cards, etc. This is calledTask lighting. You also need sufficient lighting so people do not bump into things. This is called ambient lighting. You can lighting to influence the mood. Bright lights for a good mood, low lighting for a cozy and romantic atmosphere. Like everything forgive the various elements (elements, the pun, I'm so clever) of your lighting plan must be harmonious with each other. Lighting decorative objects with spot lighting is also a nice touch. Do not forget to take into accountwhere the outlets are. You want unsightly power cable as short as possible and hidden if you can.

2nd Furniture

When it comes to furniture, there are a few points to note.

The play is suitable in function and cost?

Is it suitable in mood and style? Does she have the right look?

Is it suitable in quality? Is it a similar quality to the other furniture?

Is this appropriate piece of a proportion? If the various parts inpleasing harmony with each other?

Is the piece the right scale? Is it in harmony with the size of the objects and space around it?

Are the materials appropriate? Bright, intense colors and bold patterns increase visual "weight". Muted, neutral tones and solid colors reduce visual "weight".

If it is to follow the teaching furniture these guidelines:

The shape of the sides of the cabinet should be the shape of the wall. Do not place a round table in the cornerRooms.

Avoid placing rectangular furniture at an angle to straight walls.

If the place is on the wall horizontally, looking horizontally shaped furniture at best there.

If the space is square on the wall, a rectangular piece of furniture will look best on there.
Vary the heights of the most important pieces in the room.

Spread the colors in the room.

Here is a selection of some of the major furniture styles from all over the story and how to spotthem.

20th Century styles - are often made by educated wood, metal and plastic. We see these styles all around us. Four major styles were and are:

Art Nouveau - attempted, the machine age with carved wood and canvas imitating nature with convoluted curves and reject forms. One example is Tiffany lamps.

Art Deco glory - ornamentation. Strongly influenced by the Cubist movement of the day. It had geometric shapesand forms.

Bauhaus embraced - the machine age. There rejected all ornamentation and elevated function as it is ideal. A very minimalist style.

Postmodernism - is more of a style, but it really makes presence felt in the furniture design as well. Basically, what are produced today, and it takes many different forms explored by many different designers.
